I think this drama has poor style artists that they made the bald mullet look bad. I really think that the male leads here look bad. Really. Especially the main male leads, 4th and 8th princes. They're not encouraging to watch.
But bald mullet looks good on the guys in Yanxi Palace (Xu Cai got me pregnant with his hair style here. Haha!), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Concubine Zhen Huan.
This was so good and I love the fact that even though it's a historical, they didn't drag the story on needlessly.…
The Korean version is visually appealing to the modern viewer. The main actors for this Chinese version are too ugly, considering the fact that the Chinese movie industry overflows with handsome men. I mean really good-looking men like the ML and SML in Princess Weiyoung, Go Go Squid, Nirvana in Fire, and the uncles in Heavenly Sword (OMG, they're super hot!).
I don't think there was an issue with the budget here as Chinese production companies are rich. The casting director was at fault and should be lashed a hundred times and have his eyes gouged. So poor taste in men!
Too many actors in China and yet they chose the ugly ones to be the male leads for this drama. They're very unappealing and too old. The casts of the Korean version is way, way better than the Chinese.
The incestuous —or husband stealing by the biological sister—relationship is also unappealing to a modern viewer. I guess I just have to put up with this and continue watching.
The writer's love for the antagonist is overkill. Whoever wrote this story has a quarter of sadistic blood in him. There is little redemption for the main leads and much glory and satisfaction for the villains.
The reason I plowed through the 55 episodes is the cuteness of the FL and the chemistry between the main leads. So adorable.
But there is little redemption for all the struggles of the main leads.
My question for the writer: You are a fantasy writer who serves the escapist desires of the viewers. If the story is like real life, then why bother writing in the fantasy genre? You should have written a docu about some successful psychopaths in China.

I think the romance build up is off and the female lead is too ruthless to be likeable. I dropped (am I really dropping it for real?) the series because of her.
Wuji's reactions towards girls are so annoying.
But I so love the young Wujis. They are good child actors.
I also love Wuji's family. They truly love him. They're so sweet.
