Every country believes that their ethnicity is superior, but most received a hard lesson. For example, Nazi Germany…
No, i'm not trolling, these are my thoughts.
You mention the Indians being good in IT, and the Jews doing the dirty work like lending. And you brought up Africa being pilfered of natural resources, what does have to do with them just copying the blueprint of Jews and Indians? And as for these bamboo network you mentioned, what is stopping it from happening now? or back then? It's not like all people from Africa were poor, the opportunity to run businesses or to specialize in IT was always there. You are stating lack of a network as the reason they were not able to succeed similar to the Jews and Indians, but your neglecting the tight knit, close family ties the black community has with each other. If networking was all it took to experience the same success Jews and Indians have, then it already exist. Ok, I was not aware of the plight of hmongs, my mistake there, I just read a lot of stories of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and etc.. who do well in America after seeking asylum. But you seem to know more about it.
Black people at an early age are thought they need to work harder to get the same thing as white people. And the pride you talk about of their home country, tend to get weaker and weaker each passing generations as they assimilate more and more. So your saying, the reason black people don't experience the same success as Chinese or Jewish people is their lack of Allegiance to Africa, Carribean, and whichever is their home country? I don't know about this statement...
We don't see asian representatives in asian politics not because they don't want to. That's an unfair assumption to think that Asians do not want to be represented in politics. Asians account for 6% of the US population, should they not at least be represented in 6% of US politics?
Asians are still being discriminated all around the world, more so in certain countries. And with the influx of a rising China superpower, who, when they immigrate, choose to flaunt their wealth and refuses to assimilate, the hate has intensified to the point that black and white people assume all Asians are Chinese. This has been well documented in many parts of the North America, Australia, and other western countries. Sure, there are a contingent of Asians who are denouncing this type of racism, but it's not that big a voice. And I don't believe it's because asians are thinking, it's not my country, I can't protest, but rather, they probably just don't care.
I heard similar things too. Kdramas are too popular and some high school or university students want to visit…
We only talk about one side of this equation. Foreigners who go to these countries, are not all respectful. Some of them are very racist and see Asians as worst than black people.
Also regarding black people, they themselves can be quite racist towards Asian people. Lest we forget, back in the early days of America, Chinese laborers died building their damn railroads for even less pay than black slaves.
Every country believes that their ethnicity is superior, but most received a hard lesson. For example, Nazi Germany…
I mean, this may not be a popular thought, but one way to combat racism is to show them you can do better as a race.
Let me give you an example, a lot of Chinese immigrated to many countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and etc... When they landed in those countries, they were the minority, and experienced racism. Do you know how they combated it? As a community, they started businesses with nothing but the clothes on their back, they created their own schools, assimilated with culture, and now in modern times, a lot of their descendants are considered the richest people in their respective countries.
So even though they are still the minority, it becomes hard to be racist against them since they built up wealth and power. And in the end, wealth and power will speak more than racist bias.
From articles I read, it seems black people always say, life is hard, they have to try harder than white people. Have they seen how some asian people who immigrated to other countries have suffered, and ridiculed and discriminated against? yet they persevere? Have they seem how latin americans who come as refugees with nothing in their pocket, find success in their lives? or people seeking asylum?
If the black community work together at the beginning, and work to succeed as a group, maybe things would be different. Not sure if it's too late now, but they can certainly try to help their culture. There are a lot of rich black people, celebrities and etc... why not spend more of their amassed wealth and help the lower levels of black society as a community, rather than spouting empty words, and wanting to blame other races for their plight. They should look at the history of the Chinese, Jews, Vietnamese, Indians, and other ethnicities, and see how they combat racism, and persevere to a point where racism against them is severely toned down.
The Jews in germany faced the same path, but you know Hitler happened, so it was an extreme reaction to the success of Jews.
They can't blame it on the color of their skin either, since Indians and Latin Americans also have dark skinned people also, and they find success in their own ways as well.
I agree to your comment ..to some extent. While I do understand why they aren't in good terms with the Japanese…
It's an asian philosophy, Light skinned are normally seen as rich and powerful, while dark skinned are seen as poor, and weak.
This sort of ideology is based on the fact that in farming villages, you are laboring under the sun, so your skin is dark. But if your rich, you don't need to be a farmer and so thus your skin is white. The same concept exist in western history, where thin people were considered poor, due to the lack of food, while rich people were seen as fat. We see this in older paintings where the perceived beauty standard for women was fat. Of course in modern western world, the opposite rings true now.
So it is that embedded brainwashing that is one of the reason that Asia in general discriminate against darker skinned. In fact, look no further than India, where you have the fairer skin of the North, Punjabi's for example, vs the darker skinned cousins of the south, the Gujarati for example. There is also that racism between light skinned Indians and dark skinned Indians.
It's something i've noticed in Asia. A lot of Asian countries don't seem to respect other countries customs, treaties, and global rules. Like best example would be China, they outright just copy a lot of western brands, or make fake brands and etc... they don't seem to believe in global patents. Or i've seen countries also copy, plagiarize work from other countries, with no mention to credit that person.
Can anyone living in Korea care to educate me, because this is just my opinion. But I don't think Koreans in general care about discrimination much, from the outside, they do many things people from the western world would consider racist, but they may not see it themselves.
There is a lot of negative sentiment from Koreans about foreigners and Japanese. This may stem from issues that was present during the Japanese occupation and the Korean War, but whatever the reason, until now, there is a certain coldness from Koreans when dealing with foreigners and Japanese people. If i'm not mistaken, there are probably some establishment that refuse service to foreigners, and by foreigners i'm mostly talking about people from western culture. Plus I believe I read somewhere, SK are also a little prejudice against North Koreans.
And just like Japan, it's hard immigration rules makes immigrants living in Korea quite low. Maybe someone can correct me, since I'm not familiar what life in Korea is like. And it's not just Korea per say, I believe there are other Asian countries that have this kindof mentality as well, Japan comes to mind, and maybe China as well.
There's always a lot of racism going around in Asia, and it's blatant too, not brushed under the carpet, but it's out there. Like Chinese in general don't like Japanese, and once again it stems from the Japanese occupation of China. And these racism can be seen in Chinese movies, which paints Japanese character in the harshest light possible.
With regards to black culture, I think Asia, rather than being racist about Black culture, actually has more of a cult following for it. You can see this in young asian children who idolize black basketball players, or wanting to be like their favorite black rappers, and wearing the clothes, speaking the language, and trying to emulate how they act, how the live. It seems more cult status than anything, rather than perceived racism.
Now to discuss the racism part of the show. The world at large needs to stop painting in such specific strokes,…
No of course not, so your saying if someone makes some racial slur, I can't count it as racism, since the slur was not directed at my culture? that doesn't make sense.
Dreadlocks are not a Jamaican thing. Something in the genetics of African Americans make their hair prone to becoming curly and frizzy. And weaving, or dreads are one of the ways to tame the hair, unless they choose to go bald, or use hair straightening techniques like keratin treatment. I'm not saying every black person has frizzy hair, but a significant amount of them do.
Ok, I googled Jeremy Lin. He is a basketball player that is Taiwanese, so of course it's not ok for him to wear dreads, because he is doing it to fit in the boys in the team, which is unnecessary, Jeremy Lin's hair is naturally straight, so there was no point in him using dreads. And I doubt he is doing dreads because of some health reason or not. Keep in mind, when you use dreads, it's hard, there is a lot of breakage in the hair, and without proper hair maintenance, the weaves start stinking, and it's easier to get lice and other things. Look up Bob Marley's hair and all the problem that it came with.
Well yeah, we are in that kind of society, where we cannot claim that we have freedoms to use whatever culture we want to, or that we can make claims to. It is unfortunate that some supporters of BLM have gone too extreme, but it is a good wake up call to help our world become a more accepting one.
I would like to make two response, once for the age gap, and one for racism. This comment addresses the age gap…
western work is a lot less rigorous than work in Asia. In a lot of companies in Asia, Saturday is considered just another work day. In western society, asking someone to work even one day on the weekend is enough for most people to quit their jobs.
The reasons westerners are finding love late, has to do with a high rate of divorce, zero pressure to get married from both society and parents, and just the western idea that being in a relationship is a hassle, and they don't strive for family structure as compared to Asian families, like the Indians, where family comes first.
Pretty sure she's already an adult by the time of the kiss.
I would like to make two response, once for the age gap, and one for racism. This comment addresses the age gap…
Commonplace, meaning it's already a trend that has grown big enough that a significant amount of people will not be surprised to see it. I had no problem with the age gap, she was already an adult in my eyes during the kiss.
Okay, so, I've watched the first ep, and I really do not see anything wrong with any scenes. Although I understand…
Now to discuss the racism part of the show.
The world at large needs to stop painting in such specific strokes, and learn to paint in broader strokes. What I mean by this is that Racism is Racism, let's not sub categorize it into other categories to get away with doing it.
Like for example, the BLM in the US are using terms like systemic racism, and prejudice, and discrimination. In the end they all mean the same thing, but by saying i'm not racist, i'm being prejudiced, it's almost like they are creating an alibi for them to do something foul to other people.
In Backstreet Rookie, this same concept is being applied. Some people are defending that it's not offensive, because it's comedy, it's not offensive because he's just mocking reggae and dreadlocks. But that's the problem, in the broader term of racism, it fits the bill.
Dreadlocks and Reggae music are heavy stereotypes of people from Jamaica, and has also been interchangeably used as a stereotype for black people as well. It is very much part of the cultural heritage of Jamaicans/black people, and should not be used as some form of costume to get some cheap laughs. i would be saying the same thing if people were wearing sarongs, or bindi's on the forehead.
Now, is this to say that people can not borrow cultural aspects of another culture? No of course not, people can borrow from whatever cuure they want, as long as it fits the proper situation and not to illicit cheap laughter.
So for example. Sports team, celebrities, making slanted eyes to denote Chinese face is NOT OK.
Someone wearing a sari to an Indian wedding, or someone wearing henna is OK.
Wearing black face to make a costume to be Bob Marley, NOT OK.
Comedy needs to stop using racial stereotypes for the sake of a punchline. Is the only way illicit laughter to make fun of someone's culture, stereotypical or not?
Okay, so, I've watched the first ep, and I really do not see anything wrong with any scenes. Although I understand…
I would like to make two response, once for the age gap, and one for racism.
This comment addresses the age gap issue.
In Asia, back when some Asian countries main exports were still agricultural, families were encourage to have more than two children, with some having as many as 10-15 children. Also during these olden times, young people were encouraged to marry as early as 18-21 years old. The rationale for this? family is considered either free labor or cheap labor. It was a legal way of doing child labor, since how can they charge you for asking your son or daughter to help around the farm, regardless of age.
Fast forward to modern times, and this no longer holds true. Look no further than the Hawker community in Singapore. The stall owners/workers belong to an aging population that no longer want their children to enter the blue collar/physical labor work of being a hawker shop, instead they push their children to enter into more white collar jobs like banking, finance and etc... So as more and more young adults enter into these white collar industry, the marrying age keeps going up and up. In fact it's become a common theme in Asian society, that you should not marry at a young age, as it will slow down your career progressions, especially if you are a woman in certain Asian countries like (Japan, Korean, and etc...) So what does that mean? It means that people are not rushing to get married anymore, instead they tend to focus on their careers more. But let me list some other factors of why standard marrying age is increasing.
1. Men/Women are more focused on their careers, and love tend to make things more complicated. For example, imagine working in a company where overtime is a norm. Imagine being in a relationship with someone not from your industry, does she/he does not understand your schedule. If your significant other is needy on time, she/he will eventually demand more time, which means you will be doing less overtime, which means, someone who is single may get the promotion before you.
2. For those men/women who are not so career oriented, they instead belong to a generation that was possibly coddled by their parents. What does this mean? It means that, compared to older generations, these people are taking a longer time to mature. You will see men/women in their 40's still clubbing, still partying hard, showing a complete lack of responsibility. And when things finally click, and they want to start being adults, the dating pool is substantially smaller.
3. Taste, and a biological urge is my last reason for the later marrying age. For a lot of women, marrying a man younger than them is just a big no-no. It involves a variety of reason which include societal pressure/condemnation, and their biological urge to be married/date someone who is more secure than them, and who can take care of them. Yes of course with the rise of feminism, more women will contest this fact, but it remains a majority of women prefer older men, or at the very least confident and more experienced men. So it is not uncommon to see a women in her early 20's date a man in her 30's because there is that subconscious effort that exist that makes the woman think that the man in her 30's will be more able to take care of her, compared to someone of same age. Of course there are many exceptions to this.
For men, it's kind of the opposite. Yes, for marrying, they have that biological instinct to marry someone who will take care of them, not necessarily financially, but rather maternally. This means, a women who will help keep the domestic affairs in order, someone who has good motherly instincts for children, and etc... But unfortunately women who fit these wife-material aspect, tend to also accrue another motherly instinct, nagging, which most men dislike.
But when it comes to dating, men want the opposite of this, they want the young, cute, kawaii girl, who will fawn on their ego, and make them feel so powerful and handsome. They claim that these girls are mature, that is why they are dating them, but we know that is just a facade and an excuse.
4. For men/women who work so long, and got many promotions and success, they feel they deserve to be rewarded for missing out on the fun times of their 20's or 30's, and so they go for their fantasy girl/man as some sort of reward or attempt to catch up on what they miss. That is why in countries like Japan, a lot of the sex industry is being visited by middle-age company men, either married or not, who seek pleasure.
I was like you, wondering about all the hate in this section. Fully aware that a story about parallel universes…
I was one of the recent ones to post a less than great review on this show, so I'm guessing your talking about my group. I'm sorry, but frankly this post is quite insulting and so arrogant. I count myself as one of the people who didn't like it that much, while I don't think its the worst drama ever, I also would not go as far as to declare it a masterpiece. I rated it a 7, mostly for the great OST, excellent cinematography, and woo doo hwan's great acting. If you don't think messy writing is a reason to dislike it, what do you consider as a good reason to dislike it I wonder.
And I am going to capitalize all the insulting says you said and my response.
I ACTUALLY LIKE FANTASY AND SCI-FI, AND I STILL DIDN'T LIKE IT MUCH. I DIDN'T QUESTION WHETHER OR NOT I AM SMART OR NOT IMAGINATIVE ENOUGH, I KNOW I AM, AT LEAST ENOUGH FOR THE KING. IT WAS KIND OF HARD TO IGNORE PRODUCT PLACEMENT THAT WAS INSERTED MANY TIMES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLOT THAT TOOK AWAY FROM THE FLOW OF THE STORY, AND NO, MY ATTENTION SPAN IS NOT SHORT, IN FACT, FOR MY WORK, I HAVE RAZOR SHARP FOCUS, THANK YOU FOR ASKING. I MYSELF, DID NOT HAVE A PROBLEM SEPARATING THE ACTORS AND THEIR CHARACTERS, BUT IF A LOT OF PEOPLE DID, THEN THIS CAN ONLY BE THE RESULT OF BAD ACTING. THAT IS THE ACTUAL DEFINITION OF BAD ACTING. AND NO, ONCE AGAIN,I DON'T HAVE A SHORT ATTENTION SPAN, YET I STILL HAD TROUBLE BEING ENGAGED IN WHAT I WAS WATCHING.
-rant over-
I was just in the untamed comment section, and they are celebrating the first year anniversary of the drama, how can the people there be so nice, and we have people here that act like this. I don't know if your trying to goad people by insulting them, but it's working. I'm going to leave you to continue insulting people if that is what makes you happy. I start to wonder if your goading is part of some defense mechanism for god knows what type of insecurity, but your sheer arrogance is crazy!
Glad you decided to give this show a chance :)Kdrama Vs Cdrama is a broad topic so I'll leave it to someone with…
I've gotten so dependent on Netflix, I know i'm bad LOL. BTW, I just recently found out that Netflix blurs out some products placement, and they even change certain song in some Kdramas I watched, they even edited certain episodes length or ending. Kinda sucks that they do that, I had to find this out the hard way with one of the dramas I was watching.

Please grow up , and get a life!
Good thing this is on netflix, i've already seen the trailer and the cinematography is amazing.
