When someone rates a 10/10, 11/10 or 1/10, 0/10. I tend to ignore those, since they tend to be an over exaggeration. That's why i just ignore all the all 10's and the 1/10 in the reviews.
i believe people just rate like that due to them wanting to show how much they love or hated a show. No show is completely garbage to be 1/10, and no show is a complete masterpiece to get 10/10. And yet, people still rate like this.
I think you need to go past your obsession with the ads yourself, and try to understand, although people mention the ads in their comments and reviews, it's not the only factor in them giving it a low rating. Unless you find someone saying, I loved the whole show, but I am giving it a 1/10 specifically because of the overuse of product placement.
Also as i've explained it doesn't matter if an annoying thing only shows up 5-7%, if it's something viewers didn't like, they are well into their rights to give it a low ratings.
Imagine eating at a chinese restaurant, and the food is amazing, but the service stunk, would you rate it a 1/5 stars just because the service stunk? Other people absolutely have in yelp. So the food is amazing, but the service stinks = 1/5 stars? Doesn't make sense right? but people do it all the time, and it's up to them. If they feel the dining experience was ruined because of poor service, that's their prerogative. Similarly, if people feel their viewing experience was shattered by poor ad placement, up to them to rate a show poorly.
If you like a drama that challenges you to think, give it a try
I haven't watched primer, but interstellar goal was never to confuse with time travel theories. It was a very straightforward sci fi movie with little room for dual interpretations.
Cloy, itaewon and the heirs are not sci fi genre, and they are not suppose to make you think, just enjoy.
The ads or PPL in Kdrama normally blend seamlessly with the show and plot. So they will normally show you the…
I think you missed my point.
I am saying, if something, regardless of how harmless you find it, bothers people, that is their choice to rate a show low for it. If someone rated a show low because they showed too much ads, it shouldn't be downplayed, because nudity may not bother most people and be seen as minor, but i would rate a show low for nudity.
If you like a drama that challenges you to think, give it a try
So your saying, those who liked it are smart? And this is further proven when they understood and enjoyed such a complex script?
And those who hated it, obviously didn't pass the IQ requirement to enjoy the show? And are in denial on how low IQ they are, that they claim the show isn't that complex to hide their intellectual deficiencies?
Just making sure this is what your trying to say. If so, it's a bold statement. I better withdraw my MENSA application, as i'm obviously not getting in.
Is this going to be the staple defence for Kdrama now? Oh you didn't like Goblin, well your not smart enough. Oh, you disliked descendants of the sun? gotta get smarter to enjoy such a complex script. Oh, you couldn't follow the plot of heirs, you should go back to school, because your obviously not high IQ enough. Pretty sad if all arguments and opinions end up being like this.
The ads or PPL in Kdrama normally blend seamlessly with the show and plot. So they will normally show you the…
Its a portion of the show that bothered or annoyed some people, regardless if you feel its an important plot point or not. And you mention the coffee scene what about the deeper implication of all the other PPL if there is any? Its like having nudity in a show. Some people don't mind it, some people will go up on arms about it. Take for example the film frozen flower. Some people didn't like it for all the nude scenes and sex scenes. Or lars von tiers movie nymphomaniac. So much overly sexualize and rape scenes. Or fifty shades of grey with the abusive sdm. The offensive scenes are arguable important to the plot, but these abusive sex scenes really turned me off and I gave them poor marks for it.
Or showing rape scenes, people will argue rape scenes help the characterization or plot development. But someone like myself will pan a show that shows rape scenes, because i feel they are unnecessary plot devices that don't add anything other than shock factor, which is amateur writing at best.
Imagine watching a thriller, and in the middle and climax of the suspense, and ad for ferarri, kimchi, makeup or bubble tea suddenly appears and makes you mentally loses all that momentum. Or like watching a super tender, romantic moment, then somebody farts real loud. It's a momentum and moment killer, and the placement and timing of these ppl in the king has the same effect.
You can apply this same argument to many other things that negatively impact a show. Like imagine a children show that didn't show diversity and had a homogeneous all white cast. Like the show is great but the lack of diversity will hurt it.
Conversely many of jj abrams movies have been heavily criticized for something as minor as his excessive use of lens flare in all his movies. It has nothing to do with the plot, and yet it negatively affected many viewers experience.
Or talk about hwang jeung eums constant screeching in kill me heal me, which made an otherwise good show quite unwatchable for me.
You can't downplay what makes people rate a show low. What you may feel is insignificant, others feel is a big thing.
If you like a drama that challenges you to think, give it a try
as mentioned by another poster, not liking the king doesn't make you a simpleton. Nor does liking the king, make you a revolutionary genius.
Just because a lot of people found it confusing, doesn't make the king a thesis type of show. It was just plain confusing, regardless of your IQ.
And the king is not a mentally challenging drama to be honest. It was straightforward, and simple to understand. All you had to do was not be bothered by logic, and just concentrate on the good aspects, and ignore the bad ones.
Currently re-watching TKEM and saw this warning in some episodes - "this program contains product placements".…
The ads or PPL in Kdrama normally blend seamlessly with the show and plot. So they will normally show you the brand of the product and maybe some claim that this thing is delicious, like maybe once or maximum twice in the whole series, in the case of most Subway and BBQ olive chicken PPL. Like a gift being given by ML that is made by Swarokski, to show his love, and to move the plot along. Leegon commenting on how delicious a coffee taste, and describing it, and comparing it to coffee from Corea does not move the plot along. At best it reinforces a plot point, that didn't need to be reinforced.
But in the king, not only do they go in depth in explaining why such a thing is delicious or good via company slogan or advertising taglines, but they also literally place a stoppage in the plot flow. Like the story will stop to exclaim why such a product is great to use and etc... It happened several times where while watching, I have to pause, listen to this commercial in the middle of the drama, then resume. If maybe they found a way to blend the PPL more seamlessly, it wouldn't bother people so much, but they didn't. They should fire the PPL director or whoever, because they didn't do their job in seamlessly blending it in.
If you live in Korea, and planned or was convinced to buy the product, maybe then you won't find it too annoying. But if you, like the majority in MDL can't access the products anyway, then you find them pointless and annoying.
But I think it's quite telling, that Koreans, who are probably used to excessive PPL, and have access to purchase most of the PPL find it annoying.
Also, the PPL isn't the only reason people disliked the drama, it was just one of.
Also, that is a baseless argument about something that appears 7% of the time should not bother people and doesn't deserve lower ratings. So your telling me if a Kdrama has 7% racial, sexist, misogynistic, abusive, sadomasochistic, pedophile scenes, I should not be bothered, because 93% of it didn't? That's very illogical thinking. It only takes one scene that bothers me to make me rate a kdrama lower, no matter how long or short it is.
I came looking for comments about the show, and yet everyone is still talking about the racism in this show? lol, people need to give it a rest, kdrama is made for Koreans, and they don't care about western based racism.
Racism/prejudice has existed in Asia for literally a millenium or more, existing way back to the dynasty period. In fact, they even have prejudice against fair skinned vs dark skinned Asians, that's how bad it is.
Racism in the US has existed, since what, maybe 250 years max? And in the case of BLM, maybe far less. Yet, we don't see extremist groups popping up all over the internet in Asia complaining about how Asians are racist.
In Asia, the racism extends so deep, that if your not from there culture, good luck doing business with them. I don't see that happening in US at all, where black people are being denied opportunity for work. In fact, because of the whole diversity quota, a lot of black people are getting opportunities that is not mainly due to their skill, but because they fit some sort of diversity hire.
As a fan of the character LEE GON I'm always surprises by this kind of comments. he is neither arrogant nor a…
I am talking about the political sense, and not the Hero/Villain Dynamic sense.
Like how the Republicans have the Democrats as opposition, or the Liberals have the Conservatives as opposition, or the Labor Party has the New Democrats as opposition, this kind of opposition.
Not an evil uncle. Plus as pointed out in the story near the end, Lee rim's plan was not to usurp the throne, but rather gain control of the flute, so he can have eternal life, and unlimited time travelling power.
You make it sound as if lee gon kiling those people indirectly will make lee rim suddenly scared, which it didn't. In fact those scenes had no other effect than to show what a bad ass lee gon can be. Such a guy thing to do also. Like "oh look at me, I can beat people up and kill them, i'm so macho!" Please this is 2020, we don't need those kind of macho tropes. Ugh, i'm so annoyed remembering how misogynistic lee gon is.
As a fan of the character LEE GON I'm always surprises by this kind of comments. he is neither arrogant nor a…
Which royals exactly are you talking about? let's discuss the most famous ones, Prince William and Kate Middleton, or may she rest in peace, the late Princess Diana. detachment and aloofness are rarely adjectives use to describe them. They may at times criticize them for being not in touch with the needs of regular people, but they've always been described as polite, kind, and rarely aloof or arrogant.
That's the weird thing, the show forces us to believe he is benevolent, and makes us believe that everyone in the kingdom of Corea thinks he is the kindest thing since Mother Teresa, but his actions that we see on screen, the way he talks to his underlings, and his coldness doesn't reflect that. Which I felt served to increase the disconnect I felt with watching the film.
Imagine for example the late Steve Jobs, he always came off as a nice, professional guy on stage. It was only after his death that rumors of his God complex started to surfaces, with some ex-employees calling him the most toxic human being possible. This is a disconnect with his public persona. Same with lee gon, we saw this guy who for whatever reason is treated like a saintly person, but then we see him do these things behind the scenes, another disconnect.
Also, it's been a while since i've seen the show, exactly what does lee gon do that shows he is benevolent? Do you have specific examples? because nothing comes to mind.
lee gon, even when he acts warmly to people close to him, still comes off as cold. He gives off that vibe, and the way he treats those who are not close to him, is borderline condescending, especially if you are female. So as a female watching the show, not only did I feel he was cold and smug to most of the other cast members, but I felt he was quite misogynistic.
Here is an interesting dynamic. Normally, you don't show mercy to your enemies to show the opposition or electorates you are not a weak leader. Take for example, George Bush Jr, Obama, and other American leaders, when they deal with acts of terrorism, they need to show a strong hand, lest the opposition uses that situation to show how weak this leader is, and try to use it to topple their leadership. Lee gon is in a position of absolute power, there is no opposition, no one to take the throne away from him, so there really was no point is being merciless and cold blooded, other than to give him a mean streak.
We just have different interpretation of what we saw. I saw a arrogant, cold, and merciless king, who is warmer the more you get to know him (Tsundere), and you saw a perfect king.
If I was living in a monarchy, I would rather have someone who acts like Prince William, than someone who acts like King Lee Gon, just to be perfectly honest. And if i'm going to be under a war general, I would rather someone who actually knows battle strategy and diplomacy, rather than someone who acts first, thinks later.
As a fan of the character LEE GON I'm always surprises by this kind of comments. he is neither arrogant nor a…
Well, just because you are an emperor doesn't mean you need to be arrogant. It's like saying, well he's a CEO, so when he treats people poorly, it's not him being arrogant but him being a CEO and doing CEO things. It doesn't work that way. People will call out bad behavior regardless of your position, especially in this society, your position doesn't excuse this kind of behavior, although some may excuse you for it, majority won't. That's why they have the term benevolent leader, which Lee Gon is not.
As for Tsundere, you should read up on the description, because it describes lee gon's character development to the T. Lee Gon initially acts cold to everybody, and starts warming up near the end.

Somi is this half dutch/half korean singer, she's like 20 years old. She's an Idol that i'm hoping to be in a drama soon, as I love her looks and personality. Plus her english is quite good.
Yeah, i'm a D.O. fan as well, love him in IOTL and 100 days my prince.
People are just overestimating the qualities of the leads. Both are just your typical k-drama actors that mainly…
Yeah, it's unfortunate that this kind of thing exist, but it's not just korea, it's a global thing, even in hollywood.
I know, if a girl sleeps around, she's promiscuous, if a guy does it, it's normal. But these are the types of stereotypes that will hopefully start changing, but i'm not expecting any major changes in my lifetime.

I like Somi's appeal, and liked the song Birthday (gives me blank pink vibes). But I guess the rest of Korea doesn't agree? Is it because she's half? I thought that kind of thing is popular now.
No, I didn't say the FL in BOF was a great actress, I said she's multi-talented, being able to direct, produce, write, songwriter, sing and act. Something not a lot of people, especially lee min ho can't claim. She actually also paints as well. Of course how good she is at these things is arguable, but still being able to competently put on different hats is an achievement in itself. Too bad she went a little crazy recently.

I guess I can't relate, i've never been a fangirlr of any actors, western or eastern.
Hmm, I don't think the lower pay of the female actresses has much to do with the fans supporting the actresses as just the simple fact that Korea is still super patriarchal.
i believe people just rate like that due to them wanting to show how much they love or hated a show. No show is completely garbage to be 1/10, and no show is a complete masterpiece to get 10/10. And yet, people still rate like this.

Exactly what about the king was complicated for you? it seems that you really mentally scrunched down in watching the king.
Cloy, itaewon and the heirs are not sci fi genre, and they are not suppose to make you think, just enjoy.
