I liked this drama (despite having *huge* issues with the editing, pacing and an intermediate storyline... and probably other things). It was always about two people making huge sacrifices to protect each other and the six realms, and that was how it was to the end.
Maybe should add, I wasn't aware of the hype surrounding it before I started, so I had no expectations. I'd also read the manhua before. These two factors might have influenced my opinion.
