I dont know I think he could have kept the secret without having to lie like he could have mentioned that they're playing badminton together without mentioning the mother they are colleagues after all moreover isn't it common to draw the line if you know that someone close to you likes you and you dont share the same feelings whether you have a partner or not + he knew that Mi Bai purposely prolonged the meeting hence he missed his anniversary
the show was pretty good in the beginning which I was surprised cuz I'm not a fan when the main lead loses their lover and then get together with the ML/FL but this was so good + they had such a healthy relationship. Some much call the ML too nice/kind but if you had to lie multiple times and hide the fact that he was with MiBai even though he has a very understanding and reasonable gf that's def not being kind. Like they came up with unreasonable excuses to make MiBai and Tian Mai to make them look like good people in the end and didnt even bother to come up with an excuse or make it seem like a misunderstanding but rather made the ML test the FL's love? that there is another reason to breakup

I absolutely agree like why did they have to make MIBai good then they shouldn't have made her so bad in the first place. no where in the earlier parts they made it seem like that mi bai did whatever she did because she thought the FL was playing with his feelings. the ML was definitely at fault as well, hence he couldn't even explain himself.
