I'm glad you brought that into discussion! The Hong sisters do like to use Deus ex machina ("fate") as a plot device a lot. They write for the masses and focus on entertainment. They do sprinkle some brilliant stuff every now and then, but they're usually unserious.
I totally understand that you're not into that kind of thing. I love intricate plots and beautiful scriptwriting as well, but I also like this kind of unserious work. High fantasy is hard to pull off, and to make it more digestible to the masses they do compromise the writing.
