The animation has not fully ended yet but it'll follow the novel. At the end, Xiao Se gave up everything and went back to his inn. What I'm (and others are) upset about is that he fought so hard to be the next emperor but then suddenly gave up.

There are few main couples but most of the romance are slow because they are not the main focus. Xiao Se is with Si Kong Qian Luo, Lei Wu Jie is with Ye Ruo Yi, Tang Lian is with Rui (they are the first romance to be shown but again, very slow romance). Although romance is not the main focus, friendship is and it's very good so give it a chance.

Yes! They cut out so many. Look at the opening and closing and you will see all the deleted wedding scenes. Even their after wedding "bed scenes" were deleted. 🙄 So annoyed by that.
Yes he's back for real. Remember the bone orchid (the little moon that turned into a bracelet that he gave to Xiao Lan Hua)? It's made from his heart blood so part of his soul was still in there. Xiao Lan Hua nourished it for 500 years with her Goddess power, so that helped brought him back.
