Concerning that trope I don't worry too much cause it will end fast since it is a short dramas but mostly cause our hunky hottie ML is not the type to let go easily. Aggressively pursuing FL until she gives in is Minguo era MLs major traits.
Female lead visual grew on me. She is like a case of Alice Ke for me whom on paper I would not classify as "attractive" but got interesting features which make her pretty when looked from the front (not the side) and with time I can see her appeal. Chen Shu Jun got pretty eyes and lips and her hairstyle and make up compliment her. I think actors and actresses look their best in Minguo era dramas. This time period was so chaotic and violent it somehow calls for a certain sultriness and spiciness. Therefore both actors and actresses are styled in a way that elevates their s.x appeal. Going back to Chen Shu Jun she is good at playing those cold and intelligent vengeful but vulnerable characters.
