Maybe it does well internationally but if that was what tencent and iqiyi really wanted they wouldn't even feel the need to inflate the numbers domestically. I agree there are dramas that build popularity slowly and it's probably the case for that one here (even though I see a lot of complaints from Chinese viewers about the superficiality of its plot and the Gowns-beautiful-gowns type of energy it gives off). They should have let it this way, but tencent and iqiyi by being too eager to show results have done too much.

The Double was a huge hit both in China and overseas and I can assure nobody discussed its numbers/chart. It was such a surprise hit (an A-level production led by a then one-hit-wonder actress and a rising actor with no serious footing in the industry) a song has become the Wang XingYue-fanmade-MVs dedicated bgm until now I am writting to you. The drama OSTs became hits. I have been through Bu Bu Jin Xi, Zhen Huan Zhuan, Nirvana in fire, ten miles of peach blossom, Ashes of love, Story of Yanxi palace, Story of Minglan, The untamed, Joy Of Life 1, Love and redemption, You are my glory, Love between fairy and devil, The Double etc... and I can tell the difference between a legit superhit drama and a manufactured one supported by the leads fans. Tencent and Iqiyi went overboard with it trying and make investors believe that the blizzard in the long drama market was done and gift Zhang LingHe that breakthrough drama he has been long overdue. Iqiyi tried that shit with Ao RuiPeng last year with Coroner diary and it backfired. Last but not least, I learnt today that Iqiyi stocks' value reached a new low. How is that possible with probably the biggest hit of that last decade in their hands now ? Come on

Trending for fraudulent numbers !

Normally when a serie is an explosive hit you feel it. Take for example "The Double" or "Blossom" which were the biggest hits of 2024 in term of Chinese idol costume drama. Everything, whether in China or abroad, went viral. Literally everything went viral everywhere : dialogues, scenes, OSTs, outfits, and last but not the least the onscreen pair (Wu JinYan and Wang XingYue became the onscreen jodi of 2024 until it was announced she was married) etc... and NOBODY discussed the numbers. Everyone agreed about those numbers be it fans or detractors. You don't see that with "Coroner diary" which supposedly was a hit and even less with "Pursuit of Jade" which is facing a massive uproar in China now only because Tencent and Iqiyi were way too eager to make Zhang LingHe and Tian XiWei the biggest breakouts of 2026.
And director Zheng needs to lay low on the slow motions please. That is becoming ridiculous.

The thing with this one here is that the story is not too far from reality.
