I finally finished this drama, and I’m so upset with the writer. It was truly amazing up until they went completely off the rails. By the halfway point, I just wanted to get through it as quickly as possible and found myself skipping most of the episodes. If you were to tell me that the writer quit halfway through filming an an intern took over I would 100% believe it.

First, I absolutely hated Prince Li’s character. I ended up skipping every scene with that actress because I just couldn’t take it. It was only in the last few episodes that I found myself not hating her character. I completely get and understand why her character was written into the show, but whether it was due to poor writing or acting, I found myself hating this character especially with all of the constant pouting and childish behavior.
Second, it feels like the writer got lost trying to make the story way more complicated than it needed to be. They could have wrapped up the drama once Ruyi got her revenge and the emperor was saved. Instead, the extra plotlines felt like they were just there to fill the 40 episode count and create a way to kill off the ML and FL at the end in a way that made some sort of sense to watchers without seeming random.
Lastly, killing off the main cast was completely unnecessary. It feels like the writer did it just for the sake of doing it. I could maybe understand one or two characters being killed off throughout the show, as it would make their fight for justice more impactful, but the writer literally killed all the important characters off and only towards the end. My biggest issue with this is that it felt rushed, and the deaths (with the exception of the ML and FL) made no sense and added nothing to the story.
Overall, it’s not the worse drama I’ve ever seen but definitely did not live up to its potential and a one time watch.
You can clearly tell that in the inn scene when they are at the door in episode 7 they didn’t film together lol the body doubles they used looked a bit off and that split door shot was so weird 😂
This was a pretty good drama. I think since the plot was good and the main actors had good chemistry and can actually act it played a part in making this drama turn out well.
What it lacked in production it made up for in the story. The only major thing I have an issue with is that halfway through the drama felt super draggy and like filler episodes. They should have cut down some of the middle episodes and cleaned up the ending a bit more. Overall, it's not a bad drama for its budget.
Honestly it was so good at first and I even thought that it had the potential to be one of this year's top drama but a little before the halfway point I feel like it fell off. Basically, they wrapped up all of the important and exciting plots within the first half while the second half felt like they just needed to push out episodes to reach the 24-episode criteria. I think making this an 8–12 episode drama would have been a much better choice.
While I do find the mix of this cast to be interesting (not in a good way) I think that the casting is less of an issue than the actual production. I can tell that the main issue with this movie will lie in the director being able to turn the original web novel into a 1-2 hour movie and considering the source material I don’t really see this story working as a movie format. If it was a drama and maybe like a loose adaptation of the original I think it would be much better but hopefully I am wrong.
Between the subs and the fact that the episodes seem to be weirdly edited/ not uploaded in a cohesive order I have drop this even though I was super excited,
