That's what I think: they should have waited a few days to release it properly. Fans have been waiting for years so a few morre days wouldn't kill them.
Seriously subpar element would be quality or post-production problems. I for one will not hold it against them…
Westerners not being their main audience isn't an acceptable excuse, they could have decided not to give subtitles at all and that would be fine, but if they decide to do something they should do it properly.
The first episode was awesome but I did take off points in my rating for not giving us a proper translation. This is a supposedly serious company, and yet they made a conscious decision to release a product that has a seriously subpar element to it.

Even if it started out as a different story, I'm betting that the producers will try to cash in on the similarities and make it as close to 1000 as they can.

It's based on a BL novel, but BL dramas aren't allowed in China, so they usually turn them into bromance with homoerotic undertones, with the volume of these undertones depending on the political atmosphere in China at the time.
