For me the show was very well done and well paced, first 4 episodes focused on female lead’s journey and how she adapts to the modern world, next 4 episodes which I’d call the 2nd act focused on the leads falling in love and what the male lead was up against, because this provides the basis for the female lead time traveling to save him, and in the 3rd act - last 4 episodes, we get to see the back stories of the individual characters including the villains - both their Joseon and Modern day versions, and how that forms the premise of the overall story.
I particularly liked that some of the villains, particularly the female ones weren’t plain vanilla, but grey, and were mostly victims of circumstance. However, the show did not try to justify their actions, but had them make restitutions that were consistent with their characters.
I’m a sucker for bittersweet endings, and with all time travel shows, there’s always that element of loss when the time traveler goes back into their world. It was nice to see Yeonwoo going back in time to change Joseon Taeha’s fate and ending things nicely with him, I felt sad for him, but knowing he reincarnates in the future took away that sadness, even though he doesn’t have his past memories.
Unlike most time travel shows where we do not know the basis for the time traveler traveling, I’m glad this one provided a logical explanation for Yeonwoo traveling. It was also nice to see how they explored female empowerment, with Yeonwoo acquiring skills which she used to work and earn a living in new Joseon and using her noble woman status and money earned to help vulnerable women in Old Joseon.
It was great to see that the leads were very good at communicating their feelings and the concerns they had. Even where noble idiocy was employed, it didn't last more than 20 minutes, and it was all in a single episode.
The chemistry between the leads and entire cast was amazing, great acting from everyone, the comedic timing was awesome and the comedy wasn’t cringe, the music scoring was great, as well as the cinematography and the style of directing in certain scenes was exceptional, there were also some notable dialogues.
Overall, for a time slip drama, I think this was well executed and one of the best ones in recent times, it’s no surprise it had the highest rating of all the time slip dramas done last year.
If you’re still considering watching this, I’ll suggest you dive right in and make a decision after the first two episodes. The first episode is fully sageuk, while the second takes place in modern day. Only the first and last episodes take place in Joseon, and the flashbacks wasn’t overly done.
Some people might think some aspects of the show was rushed, but given that it’s only 12 episodes, I think they tried to make it as concise as possible. It’s one of those shows where you really have to pay attention because they do a lot of “show then tell (explain),” which is the mystery element of the show and the main driver of the story.
PS: This has a good balance of mystery, romance and comedy, however the comedy is utilised more in the first half and the second half is heavier on the mystery and romance. If you are expecting a simple, cheesy romcom, then this is not the show for you.
I’m so excited for this show. I think this is my most anticipated Netflix original of 2024. My faves from Trolley, Kim Hyunjoo and Park Heesoon are reuniting, Ryu Kyungsoo is also reuniting here for the 2nd time with Kim Hyunjoo, both have worked previously with the director on JUNG_E and Hellbound.
I will really miss my ParkHa couple. I truly enjoyed this show from start to finish, not a single boring moment for me. I love how they were able to connect the story between Joseon and New Joseon, and how the story was neatly wrapped up. Though I wish we had more couple moments after Yeonwoo came back to Seoul 🥹
I can’t praise the leads enough, Lee Seyoung showed us she can do great in comedy, melodrama, sageuk and modern shows and Bae Inhyuk showed a new side to him as an actor - this drama definitely showed that he’s got a huge potential. The support casts, Joo Hyunyoung, Yoo Seonho, Jo Bokrae, Jin Kyung, Lee Junhyeok, were equally amazing. The cinematography, scoring, directing and even the writing was great for a rookie writer. I’ll keep an eye for the future works of the people involved. I didn’t realise how much I loved this show until it ended.
Part 2 was certainly stronger than Part 1, especially the last two episodes.
I love the theme of the show, and I hope it serves as a reminder that our lives are precious, and our problems are only a small fraction of our time here on earth.
l disagree with those saying the show has become boring, yes the tone of the show has shifted, but the writing is still consistent and anyone interested in the mystery element will find this interesting.
The writing of this show has been divided into three acts, the first act (Episodes 1-4) is about Yeonwoo’s journey to New Joseon and how she adapts to the modern world. Second act (Episodes 5-8) is about the leads falling in love with eachother, which involves a lot of comedy. Now the third act (Episodes 9-12) which many may not like, because the tone is far more serious than earlier episodes is the very essence of the drama and on which the premise of the show is set up. The mystery is being unravelled in these episodes, we get to see the reason behind Joseon Taeha’s death, the motives of the “villains” and Yeonwoo and Taeha supporting eachother to overcome their fate.
We have 2 episodes left, going by the webtoon, these 2 will be angsty, but the story will still be as beautiful as it is.
If you’re here for some slapstick comedy or fluffy romcom, despite this having some very good comedy, I doubt this is the show for you.
This felt like Sweet Home meets Mr Sunshine. I love both dramas, so I naturally enjoyed this. The actors were great, the plot was interesting, pacing was alright, amazing cinematography and the closing OST by EXO’s Suho is really catchy. I’m excited to see how the story unfolds.
I think his character was not written well.he looks like a good guy but comes off as creepy.I like that he helps…
He’s a troubled character in need of love and attention. Both his grandfather and mother aren’t the best of people, he knows this and treats them accordingly, and they also treat him like he’s not worthy of their affection. I think the actor is doing a good job portraying his role. Viewers feel uneasy about Taemin, because Taemin is not exactly “happy” on the inside - he also feels uneasy.
I’d say we’re starting to see some character development now that he’s started working at the company and interacting with more people.
I have a good feeling he’ll play a pivotal role in saving our leads in the subsequent episodes.
This is a 12 episode drama, there’s no time to waste time on scenes and spoon feed by showing us every detail.…
Yeonwoo was making lingerie and clothes that weren’t considered as conservative in Joseon, so I don’t think it’s out of place for her to dress the way she does in New Joseon.
Part of the reason they spent so much time emphasing her role as Madam Butterfly and showing how the king wasn’t happy with the outfits she was making is to connect it to her being a maker of fusion hanboks in modern day.
After watching about 5 episodes of this drama I can say that is lacking in some aspects for it's genre.I think…
This is a 12 episode drama, there’s no time to waste time on scenes and spoon feed by showing us every detail. We already have many fish out of water scenes of Female Lead, and her being taught Hangul. Also, remember she was learned and very progressive back in Joseon, so it’s natural for her to adapt fast.
We have Yeonwoo struggling to use a revolving door, not knowing how to use a vacuum cleaner, being in awe of chocolate, trying to pay her cab fare with milk because it was a treasure in Joseon that only the king had access to, looking at the clouds in amazement and comparing it to marshmallows. At some point, if this becomes overdone, the character begins to look stupid.
You compared this to Durian’s Affair, I hope you also realise that the ending of Durian was rushed and the show ended up going nowhere because they wasted so much time on fish out of water scenes.
The director of tsopmc has made it his mission to showcase Lee Seyoung’s beauty in every episode. I’ve always known she was stunning, but her beauty here is a discovery
