IMO they dragged out her latest plan (to get SRY to perform with her) for too long. I feel like they could've condensed it into a "Powerpoint" style sequence without losing much. It's really just a matter of preference. Xiao (little) and 'er (child) are diminutives and therefore more endearing. A' is more straightforward and doesn't really mean anything. Other descriptors can be used too, not just xiao, for example gao (tall), pang (fat), lao (old), etc. Lao in particular is very common for nicknames for men, even those who are not actually old.

After JL and JRY left, there was a third person (most likely Yu'E) who arrived and checked to see if he was breathing. They wouldn't show that for nothing. Most likely it was Yu'E who paralyzed him.
