lowk they are REALLY differenttt 😭 agent kim reactivated and a shop for killers shouldn’t even be compared . akr is much more of a fast-paced action thriller with comedy, family drama, and that whole “ordinary dad who has a crazy past” setup. the comedy actually plays a huge part in making the show feel lighter despite all the chaos, especially with the side characters and the way kim’s serious moments are contrasted with more unserious situations. and with akr, the main emotional drive is also pretty straightforward: kim is trying to find his daughter after she goes missing, which forces him to bring back the skills and identity he had buried. the conflict is heavily tied to min-ji, her situation, and the consequences surrounding her, so the revenge/action aspect is much more direct and personal.
a shop for killers on the other hand is WAY more layered. it starts with ji-an returning after her uncle’s death and slowly realizing that the life she thought she knew was basically built around a much bigger secret. even the “shopping mall” itself turns out to have a completely different purpose, and the story gradually reveals why ji-an was raised the way she was and how her uncle’s past connects to everything happening in the present.
that’s why i feel like shop for killers requires more digging into the characters and their motivations instead of just following the main conflict. jin-man isn’t simply “the mysterious uncle” and ji-an isn’t just some girl trying to survive the way he raised her, the survival skills he taught her, the secrets he kept from her, and the people connected to his world all add layers to why everything unfolds the way it does. the story makes u look back at earlier details differently once u understand more of the bigger picture.
so when ppl compare the two just because they’re both action dramas with revenge-ish elements, i’m like ??? because the appeal is completely different.
even the family dynamic is different. akr focuses heavily on the father-daughter relationship and how kim’s past catches up with the life he built for his daughter, while shop for killers is centered around the complicated relationship between ji-an and jin-man and how his secrets shaped her without her fully understanding why.
so yeahhh 😭 akr having comedy doesn’t make it “less deep,” and shop for killers being darker doesn’t automatically make it better.
nevertheless BOTH are great dramas imo, but comparing them like one is supposed to be a replacement for the other is kinda missing the entire point 😭
