I think it's obvious that in the novel like in the drama there something between Tanglici and Ashui just because there are no big open declarations doesn't mean they don't exist they bulit something between Ashui and Tanglici, but they cut out too many scenes and her scenes too yes others too ,etc.. but still others,at least they got closures and , it is seems they were afraid or worried of losing a certain group of viewers.in the novel these are feelings unspoken like in the drama, I think it's similar in Blood River . but BR they also did it something better then using the female role as a sacrifice for ml or just a romantic plot If I hadn't looked it up, I would never have thought that Su Mu Yu i Bai He Huai would end up together because their scenes are not very many but don't seem romantic either ,and as always it's the female role that quickly develops feelings for ML but for Su Mu Yu it's more like slowburn .
going back to whispers of fate another interesting thing is when Zhong Chunj she wanted to confess her feelings for Ml, he gently rejects but also explains that FangZhou never taught him to love one person , there are those who use this scene as proof that ml has no feelings for anyone and as a big obsession over FangZhou of course it's a clever way for the screenwriters to avoid unnecessary romantic drama but l think it's more about that FangZhou there is no way would teach ML about romantic feelings, he had to experience them himself as part of his journey of the seven emotions..
