For fake snow . They were filming his fight scenes with bandits inside the studio and if you notice, the crew members were using masks through out the filming process while he was exposed to it

In the novel, there is not as such toxic or obsessed thrid wheels. Both the leads sorted out things with others pretty early and if I remember correctly, in the novel they never had multiple break ups and all those typical misunderstanding.
