I think this is one of my main issues with this series - the writing is just not it. Even for daily drama standards, the writing leaves much to be desired.

Well, I am always team JD. I finally watched the scenes were JD was dancing in the Art Academy and I have to say I felt abolutely no sympathy for HR. And I hope JD cooks up another prank to humuliate HR...because she deserves it.

I think your guess is correct. Remember when SS came to live with MI? When "KS's delusional gf" heard about SS moving in, she was grumbling and saying something about him being too stressful. That indicates some sort of familiarity between them. Also, SS talks about her in way that indicates he has known her for a long time. So, it does make sense that she is his wife's friend.
