As for sengoku period be it a daimyo like Oda Nobunaga or general like Date Masamune they either have a modern hairstyle or a long hair tied as ponytail.

This was acceptable for me in the bakumatsu/meiji period. In almost every anime I watched the shinsengumi in the bakumatsu era usually have long long hair. Later the survival have a moder hairstyle which is understandable for it being a period when they opened up to western culture.
