Yes, you are right. I too believe he does love her, just not as strong as his family's protection desire. He also lost sight of his initial drive in becoming an official in the court thanks to wanning and her abusive ways of molding him into an empty shell. He lost sight of everything and XFF was the only positive thing he had - ruthlessly broken and eliminated by wanning, his family, and him as well, the final one done as he had no other choice.

I agree. He had no choice. You see with Wanning and what we were shown today of how she first met him and her 1st scheme with the handkerchief, once she set her eyes on him he was done for with no chance to run or free himself. If he did confine in Jiang Li/XFF all that would bring is either two body counts more (apart from his and XFF's lives) or XFF really being killed by Wanning and SYR imprisoned in her private prison to be tortured by her until he breaks (and believe me when I say Wanning is crazy enough to fake SYRs death and torture him in the prison), hell she'll even sleep there to torture him emotionally more. I feel like after SYR hit XFF with the shovel he did not make sure she is dead dead, but just buried her in shock of what he did - hence how she survived inbetween the raindrops. No one really thinks that apart from fate and luck, it was also thanks to SYR being a coward that XFF managed to survive that predicament.

The way he emphasised Qi Zi made even me hear it as wife instead of chess piece/pawn lol.
