I think considering the genre they did really well! They actually packed a lot of criticism into it. In part it reminded me of the movie „Jojo rabbit“.

Imo they did not treat the Mao era with kid gloves at all. The drama is full of criticism and the comedic elements are also a way of criticism like in overdrawing something almost like making a caricature but not quite. The harsh circumstances of the people were shown in different aspects, food, housing, education etc But of course that was toned down. No one wants to see too much misery in a romance drama. For me they struck the perfect balance!

Actually I don’t think it’s far fetched that he developed romantic feelings towards her. They come from the same place and have (seemingly) similar status, and he is a no-nonsense kind of person who clearly would not admire a damsel in distress. I cannot picture him falling for anyone but her. It’s way more plausible than that Li Huai An. But I think they will develop a sincere camaraderie kind of relationship.
