Yes, I agree with everything in this article. My first Korean drama did not have a love triangle so imagine my surprise when the next 100 or so did. Also, thank you for mentioning that love triangle's are actually not a thing in reality. It's not that two people can't like the same person but generally, that person tells one, "I'm not into you" and that's that.
My main issue with the love triangle scenarios is either you have a 2nd male lead not respecting a female lead telling him, 'Nope" (This was the scenario of My Love From Another Star...sorry Park Hae Jin.) Or else you have a scenario where the woman doesn't know her own mind. Guess what, that means you don't love either of them.
It is basically a cheap trope for lazy writers. I do appreciate that some writers are not doing these so much but I still see them too often.
This is beautifully thought out. This is actually addressed little by little and will come to a head between them…
I was going to point this scene out. The immediate reaction when she finds out about the attempts on the Prince's life and GTY being in the middle of it all. It was an honest reaction of concern and shock.
He loves her but he a man of his culture and environment. He kept putting her off until he felt things would be…
Yes, this is how I see it. I am not mad about GTY, ML or QH because they are all just products of their environment. That's what the first 15 episodes were to show us. Now everyone gets mad about one character or another when I think the point is that they all have flaws and see things a certain way based on their own circumstances and personalities. Great drama. Wish I could watch to the end but, alas, I wait.
Why does ML what GT to have concubine???? and does he take another ?????
She could have easily avoided by just sending her husband in to deal with it but explains that she can just "chase her away later". I think it was used to provide some angst to the relationship.
Some clever dramas are painted as boring and bad just because some viewers cant get the intelligent script. I'm…
I love my Asian dramas, but an over abundance of "intelligent scripts" isn't generally a problem. I've been most interested in what gamers think of this one and it seems pretty mixed. I really love shows where at the end I have this light bulb moment of understanding everything (like The Sixth Sense or even a 49 Days). I just think people like that moment of oh, that's how it is going to go and happy or sad can somewhat deal. (though we all want happy ...lol)
I do get what you say about clever dramas getting the boring/bad names. Sometimes dramas just aren't everyone's cup of tea so better just to drop and move on.
If an ending needs clarification or explaining (which the writer has done), that is a failure of the writer. I wasn't super invested so not really bitter but it does show me that while this writer has great ideas, she cannot finish off her ideas well. That's unfortunate because she is one of the few that really tries to do unique concepts.
I wish Chinese dramas cast close to accurate actors I mean I'm not asking for 16 year old to play 16 year olds…
I am taking this from someone who read the book so grain of salt and all that. When we first see them as adults the gal is around 15 and the 2nd lead is around 20 and the main lead is 24ish because he's been galivanting around and is finally buckling down to school. No, the actor doesn't look mid twenties either but none of the sisters are believable as teenagers either. But I totally get what you are saying; it does take one out of the drama a bit.
If anyone's read the book, I'm interested if this is right or not and what the ages are upon their marriage though I suppose it doesn't matter. The daughter looks like she's aged 3 or so years since we last saw her but not sure.
I was planning to watch this and kept it on hold because i really liked W and didn't want to get anxious at claiffanger…
I watched the first 4 episodes and then from 5 through 14 turned it into a background drama which I didn't have to give my full attention. Now I'm just 15 minutes into episode 15 and trying to determine if I even want to finish my barely-paying -attention watch of the show. Basically, it wasn't really that good from the get go, and I'm someone who remembers W fondly.
Truthfully, if you think of Pride and Prejudice the coincidences line up as well. Darcy just happens to visit…
Loving it. While some found the early episodes boring, I like how we understand every character and their all- to- human flaws. So many dramas have cookie cutter side characters.
In the beginning, I loved this drama to the point of casting aside SKY Castle and Alhambra for a while, but since…
I really liked the first half though it's always had a makjang element. I like that everyone isn't perfect and makes mistakes but when HaeRa sees the hospital form with In Joon's signature, I thought she could make sure it was really his signature because she works in his office.....but nope, she just assumed it was him. And the convoluted revenge of having to marry him. Oy. And I don't buy he's so in love he wants to marry her so quickly. I still haven't completed last weeks episodes as I'm determining if I want to continue, but I probably will just skip watch a bit because I actually was pretty invested in the first half.
I just finished Story Of Yanxi Palace and was in detox mode lol, so I needed another history drama to watch, but…
Truthfully, if you think of Pride and Prejudice the coincidences line up as well. Darcy just happens to visit his godmother/aunt when Jane is visiting her friend. Darcy just happens to return home right when Jane is touring his home. But, yeah, I get what you say.
was it confirmed that the 4th sister was truly pregnant? is that why the servant told her to bow a bit when she…
My understanding is she is going in as the main wife because Concubine Lin and her daughter would not have been so happy otherwise. I am unsure whether she is really pregnant. I am also unsure of the bowing; I thought perhaps to show some humility given the situation.
I've always said that Anne Rice has a lot to answer for with a healthy dash of blame to Charlaine Harris as well. Having said that, I like supernatural and am willing to give the vampire thing a go. I have more experience with k-drama so I guess Vampire Prosecutor is the only one that actually did respectably in Korea but I didn't love that so much either.
Blood- too much hospital politics and a muddled ending. Orange Marmalade - actually had an okay start but I dropped when it went historical and I actually like historical. Scholar Who Walks the Night - Someone explained that the source material is well-liked but very complicated with lots of different variables. The screenwriter didn't successfully pick and choose what worked and what didn't though LJG as Scholar is beautiful and Gwi is sexy as heck. Of the ones that I watched, this one had definite potential but, again, court politics and a muddled ending.
As far as Twilight, the books are godawful in terms of how they were written, but I'll give the author her due for her vampire mythology and world building. I actually thought the first movie was well directed, liked the music and romance of it. One of the best kiss scenes in recent years though perhaps with some questionable acting here and there.
For anyone who likes vampire stories, I recommend Moonlight, a US show from some years back that got canceled after one season but a pretty solid season.
I wasn't super interested in this drama when I first heard about it, paired with comments about the slow pacing,…
This production is from the same people who brought the Nirvana in Fire series to us, but I wouldn't say story-wise they are similar at all. Story of MingLan is more slice of life and this is a genre that I don't see Chinese dramas do that often though what is available to me is limited so others might know better. Honestly when I go over C-dramas I've watched, no historicals come to mind though there have been a few contemporary.
