I watched Story of Kunning Palace before this and although I loved Zhang Linghes' character in that one, they made him look so weak and useless during the fight scenes that I literally cringed a couple of times. So seeing him so strong and dependable in this drama is such a balm to my heart and his character is so beautifully written, strong yet gentle where it really matters.

Yes, you are right, the main girl is the one that dies, sorry it been a while. The theory is that they meet again in the afterlife in the ending scene of them together, that he probably waited for her until his death, that's why he is seen waiting for her by the cliff.
But another theory which is honestly my wishful thinking was that there was a scene at the end that no one talks about where one of the side characters who the last episode is told in his perspective, he receives a letter that "was written in a clumsy scrawl, as if it was written by a young child", he hears that the main girl has died and assumes that the letter was written by the main guy instead, but I found that weird cause the main guy is a well educated lawyer, why would his letter be clumsy and childlike, whereas the main girl "Su-a" was illiterate and the main guy was the one who taught her to read and write. It made me feel like maybe she didn't die and that they are actually both in hiding somewhere, that's why we don't get the main guy's perspective at the end only the side characters' perspective of everything that happened.

You're welcome, it's also one of my favourite webtoon, I was very excited, to see it getting an adaptation, I just really hope it has more of a happy ending than the webtoon.

Basically they don't end up together cause the main dude dies, but then we find out that he might not have died after all that he is most likely in hiding. But in the end she gets to live her life happily, a lot of readers felt that maybe there's a chance they might meet in the future.
