Maybe I missed something in ep.19 but I didn't think he was an antagonist?
Oh yeah House of Sins was an interesting one that I honestly just didn't fully understand tbh, but for the balloon one was supposed to be good with IT becoming the vessel instead of a person essentially (cause the "good" brother was using it to get rid of HIS bad emotions that kept building up by being the vessel.) That's why at the end when he was like "do you need my help" and got denied he offered him the balloon instead but the "non-vessel" brother was trying to learn to live with bad emotions so didn't want any help at all yet.
At least that's how I understood it. There have been a couple I've been more confused about than this one but they're all sort of hand-wavey.

Anything with Yan Zi Xian is good even when it's bad cause he's my bias 😅 - Currently Airing Strange Notes is a good non-romance. Deadly Loop was good until the very end. Ancient Workplace, Love Handbook was cute. Dream in the Mirror was super interesting. Life after Life... 1st half was amazing and worth the watch alone but it goes downhill. My Piggy Boss is hilariously adorable with glitter poofs and alien pigs. The Girl Inside Me was very different from "Normal" body switch/takeover transmigration shows. Dramatic Self-help strategy guide was fast paced and unpredictable.

Rather the aphasia wasn't false. She IS having issues walking, talking and eating, but everyone saw aphasia symptoms and went "she had a stroke" when the truth is that thats just the most common reason to "suddenly" get it. But there are many other reasons it can happen. The brain is a weird thing and will shut down to try and protect you. That's why (and I'm using my own anecdote here not her issue) you can have all the symptoms of a heart attack, go to the ER and be told you're "just having a panic attack and pulled a muscle" and "take Tylenol and get some therapy".
I finally got around to finishing the 2nd half of this one and feel like you have to say "what was THAT" to the end and last two episodes 😅. It really wasn't too bad until that though.

Personally I think he did leave himself that very small opening to return after the soup because she begs him not to take the brush saying (basically) If he takes the brush that means it's real and there's no going back... He doesn't take the brush. He doesn't "repay" the money he "owes"... he just leaves. He is essentially conflicted just like you're saying. He can't have what she did on his conscience right then and he's afraid she WOULD be able to do something worse for him in the future, so he leaves. But part of him REALLY doesn't want to.

Then, when another friend started watching it that also watches vertical dramas I actually had her write out what she thought was going to happen next... 🤣 - She was about 99% correct (I ended it with "Okay so you just wrote the plot, now go watch it in action 🤣)

This is an anthology show so he isn't in every episode. On the show site he's listed 3rd after Yang Xinming and Purba Rgyal. Up to ep 13 is out and YZX has been in ep 1, 4/5 (2 parter), 8, 9, 13 - so he's been in almost half of them so far.
