I can only speak for those I have seen, which are five of the list. I agree that Temperature of Love and Suspicious partner were not as good as they could have been. Even 'while you were sleeping' had its weak points although I did enjoy it a lot. I have to disagree with 'Chicago Typewriter' and, especially' Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim'. Those were two really good dramas. I agree with you that the character dynamics in the past were much more interesting in Chicago T., and his hairstyle WAS terrible, but they even explained in the first episode why he basically goes bald lol
Anyway, Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim: I think you should give it another chance. While it is not in my Top 10, it's a very good drama, with chemistry to reach the moon, and very, very good writing and character dynamics. All the characters are equally broken, while trying to uphold their dignity and sometimes miserably failing. There are definitely flaws, I thought the medical aspect was sometimes overwhelming and I wished for more focus on the character's pasts, but it is a truly inspiring drama, I believe.
Okay, so I just finished the final episode of a drama that became like an obsession to me in the past two months…
First of all: The first 20 minutes were just all over the place. How did he abduct her in the first place?? How could Ma Yi Deum fall for his stupid lies? How did the warehouse where she was kept suddenly end up RIGHT NEXT to where they were meeting when before, Yeo went to an entirely different neighborhood (or at least it seemed that way, otherwise they could have shared a car, duh). How could they not all die from the flames and the smoke? Someone who nearly died in a fire does NOT wake up with perfect hair and not a single flock of ash on her face. We were taught that you only have to take three breaths of fire smoke, and you'd die from toxic gas. You wouldn't even survive 60 seconds, even if the flames don't reach you. But whatever, this is dramaland I guess. Then, I was SO happy her mother didn't instantly recover her memories because that would have been so cliché..... and then the courtroom, SUDDENLY she remembers. WHY. It made no sense. It was unnecessary. URGH. Then.... death sentence. Really?? Even if in South Korea death sentence doesn't actually mean you'll get executed, it was conveyed in such a bad way. I would have almost preferred his suicide, at least if they had written it in a better way. He wanted to die anyway. Why didn't he commit suicide in prison?? I think they tried to make him look a bit crazy, but they didn't quite succeed. It was just never clear enough. Then, the romance. Okay, so.... they go like: 'Hey, it's been a year', but apparently she sent him text at night all the time? And he doesn't reply, even though Yeo is quite obviously head over heels for her? Now, then the drinking scene. I admit, it's a funny idea to switch their roles. BUT, a HUGE but. 1. Yeo doesn't seem drunk. At all. 2. If he was drunk, he wouldn't be able to remember and play back everything she said to him in the exact wording. 3. Since he cannot really be drunk, it doesn't make sense for him to fall back and pass out after this kiss. I was waiting for him to get up, completely sober, and be like: 'payback for last time', and then kiss her again, because it would have been the only scenario that made sense. I am so so so disappointed. My ship sailed but I feel like I was cheated. It was cringe-worthy. And now I'll go and cry myself to sleep by such incompetence....
Okay, so I just finished the final episode of a drama that became like an obsession to me in the past two months or so, and I am like: What the heck did I just watch? the final episode was a MESS. Like, honestly, did the writers come down with a flu and they asked the intern to take over? Because there is no other way I can explain how much the final episode disappointed me. I get they tried to tie all loose ends, but that was simply not the way to do it. The big final was so not gripping, the storytelling not-coherent, the showdown at court made no sense, and the romance, while funny, was RIDICULOUS. I will explain why in a spoiler post. Can we please just rewind and have a new finale?? :((
I am seriously sad, the first 7 or so episodes where the BOMB, but then it started to slowly go downhill and be filled with the clichés we so much hate. There were a couple of ingenious lines, but that was it. I was about to give it a 9, but it dropped to a 7 or so in my books after that last episode. Sadness...
Unfortunately it seems to be true. Most actors keep pushing the date ahead as long as possible, and he has been…
what, honestly?? no season 3?? No wayyy, I am so disappointed. The hope was all that kept me going. Ahhhh, heartbroken. :(( well, I mean, things can always change, right? If the director said it definitely it would be more definite. We should not give up hope. And I looked it up, and it says that Korean men between 18 and 35 have to serve in the military. However, I am not sure how often they can push back the drafting notice. What a bummer. Let's hope and pray ;'(
Does anyone know if he's completed his military service? Ssomeone on the Age of Youth 2 thread said that he still…
Unfortunately it seems to be true. Most actors keep pushing the date ahead as long as possible, and he has been in theatre productions every year since 2009, so there was no time for military service. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think they need to enter the military when they reach age 30, so there is probably no more way out. If we're very lucky they might pre-produce Age of Youth 3 before him entering military service. I really hope so. I agree with you, if Son Seung Won doesn't join the cast for AOY3, it would be all in vain. Imagine, even worse, they replaced Sungmin's actor like they did previously, I couldn't enjoy it :(
Yes it is and the rate should be much lower, because people may mistook it as an good, ambitious title.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I've watched about 100+ dramas, and this one is still in my top 5. It's a great show for many, when it first aired, it was one of a kind in many aspects. Overall shows nowadays have become much better production wise, etc. but even so, they don't grip me the way city hunter did, and I've rewatched it many times. Unfortunately it was still in the times of the wallflower kisses, but other than that, it beats most newer dramas
It was enjoyable but definitely more 'sassy' in the beginning. In my opinion our princess turned too docile in the second half. While I thought she was a bit extreme in the beginning, it was an unrealistic character development for her. I would have liked her to continue to be more involved in the state affairs and troubles. I do recommend it to watch if you just want a relatively light-hearted and funny historical drama, but there are better ones out there. One thing they did right, though: No actual love triangle! Also, I may be the only one thinking that way, but I thought the princess looked too old for how she behaved. Her character could not have been older than 20 in the drama, but they picked a 30-year old actress, which I think was a bad choice. 7/10
she doesn't take into consideration the feelings of victims, she just does what needs to be done to win a case.…
I haven't started watching it yet, but to me it seems the writers made her intentionally into a seemingly cold and ruthless person to allow for change and character growth. This is by no means a bad thing. Some of the best books I have read were about characters with questionable if not horrible personalities. It is just rarely done in the entertainment industry....
Jiwon: be careful okay? If something bad happened to you... Seungmin: *hoping for some romantic line* Jiwon: i'll…
Indeed. I love that they show Sung Min always bossing around the youngsters. He is always cool and composed. The only person that can get her way with him is Ji Won. And it's not because she can win over everyone, it's because he lets her win. I love that so much about their relationship. Ahhh, I want them to get even more screen time xDD
oh gosh jiwon and sungmin are so cute I'm melting every time I see them
Yeah, I think the screen time of each of the girls is about the same. And Jiwon and Sungmin are also my favorite couple. I want them to FINALLY progress a little more, although their bickering is also golden :DDD
Ahhh, I cannot believe it will soon be over T__T I love the second season as much as the first, and I will miss those girls. It's such a fun, realistic and beautiful slice-of-life drama.
Do people really intentionally get into asian dramas? I always got the feeling that we all got curious about something…
I think it really depends on the kind of person watching. I have failed so far to get my friends to like any K-dramas. A lot of people liking Asian dramas have a history of watching Anime. My friends do not. And, face it, many Asian dramas are just super weird. So if you've never watched Anime and you're new to even watching shows with subtitles, what will make you maybe stick around is a show so amazing that it blows you away. It also might help if the show has some western vibe to it, to help transition xDD So, yeah, I think choosing the 'right' drama for someone just starting out can help a lot.
I feel like this list is overly recent for someone who's a beginner.
I agree, there are few 'older' dramas that would attract the attention of new folks. Fashion, design, production quality, overall visuals, it would seem outdated and not as appealing. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, f.e. as an action/romance I would still recommend Time between dog and wolf, despite it having aired in 2007, City Hunter and Queen in Hyun's man are somewhat timeless as well, in my opinion.
I agree with DOTS, Healer and The K2. Personally, I couldn't get to like Man to Man and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon was mediocre at best in my opinion.
Here are my personal favorites for beginners:
1. It's Okay, That's love (Romance, Comedy, Drama, Psychological): Other than being my Nr. 1 favorite drama, which will never change, it has a fantastic plot, brilliant writing and great characters. It also has a western vibe to it, which will make it easier when you're new to Asian dramas.
2. Weightliftig Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Comedy, Romance, Sports): Fluffy, beautiful college romance with lack of many clichés. The romance unfolds slowly and leaves room for inner struggles, competition and other college problems. The main couple is so sweet, you won't need chocolate anytime soon.
You Who Came from the Stars (Comedy, Romance, Drama, Supernatural): It was my first K-drama and paved the path to a 150+ MDL lol I loved every single second about it. I could spend hours talking about the amazing performance of the main leads, the stellar scenography and filming, but I will spare you and just tell you to go watch it.
Some more k-dramas I highly recommend for first timers: Another Miss Oh, City Hunter, I remember you, Age of Youth, Oh my Venus, Queen In Hyun's man (as a first time historical drama watcher)
On episode 4, and something doesn't sit right with me. It's a good show, I know it is, but somehow it doesn't grip me yet. I usually binge-watch series, but I've only managed to watch one episode a time. I hope it grows on me soon, else I am going to drop it.
