It was heartbreaking watching him have so many debts before he was even 20 years old because of his father's life choices. No wonder he was always exhausted. He had been working to pay off the family of the deceased, paying for his mother's and father's medical bills, plus what he needed to be able to feed, clothe, educate himself with. I felt like she put it there just because her parents were coming and didn't want them to see it just in case they arrived at her room before she could greet them outside.
