She was a concubine to JL's father in the novel.

Because they removed the other prince from the plotline for now so they had to shift the actions to the princess doing them instead. I guess they didn't want to hire another full-time actor. We might see him briefly only at the last episodes.

I understand why they tried to humanize him and make him a more complex and layered character for the drama. The novel showed him as a ruthless and ambitious man who wanted to climb the career ladder at any cost while maintaining a clean reputation. In the drama some of the blame for his actions is shifted to the princess.

All in all, still acceptable for a drama adaptation.

The problem with changing the Princess' character and plotline in the drama is that her actions make less sense. Dressing up like going to party to crash a court session, openly insulting the emperor, and being obsessed with XFF is a big divergence from the novel. This is the only point I feel was handled in a poor manner in the adaptation.
I guess they were trying hard to make Shen Yurong be sympathetic to the audience.

I will definitely be rewatching the drama slowly when it finishes airing😄
