Just finished watching. The highs of this drama were a 10/10 so I definitely get the hype, there was a point where I couldn't stop watching and didn't want to miss a single dialogue. But around the episode 30 mark is where it went to a 8/10 for me, still good but not nearly as good as the buildup in the initial episodes. In overall a solid drama, this is one of the few times where the whole cast was perfect to me

Don’t get me wrong I’m not someone that bashes people for what they like and I understand the entertainment values. I’m just saying if you put your subjective opinion aside and look at it from an objective point of view it is not a well adapted cdrama and in that regard it does not deserve the endless amount of praise

About the story, The Untamed was my first adaptation so there was no bias or prior knowledge for me to cloud my opinion. I thought it was extremely messy storytelling with bad directing and mediocre acting.
I look at every medium with 2 lenses, my critical lens and my subjective lens. Because believe it or not I actually enjoyed watching it to some extent and see it more as a guilty pleasure hence why I rated it a 7. But objectively it’s just not good and I fail to see why so many think it is.
So I want to contribute to this comment section by sharing a review I wholeheartedly agree with. One of the few negative reviews I could find buried underneath all the praise. This is not me hating on The Untamed, I just want people to know that not everyone thought it was a masterpiece because that's all I see which I just find odd. Are we really watching the same drama.

Overhyped, greatly.
I only watched this because I've seen the anime and also read the book. And it is because I've seen the anime and read the book that I was able to make myself finish it.
I don't understand why this became so hugely popular considering the acting was mediocre at best, and the plot whilst they did their best under censorship laws, lost what made the actual story so great and riveting - the gore, the horror of dead corpses, the actual BL romance and not 'bromance', etc.
It is definitely one of those dramas where it was painful to watch throughout - terribly acted out scenes, inconsistent CGI quality, lacklustre fight scenes - but something you can't completely regret watching. I've got to hand it to Xiao Zhan though, because that last cut of his smile actually made me forget how terrible the entire drama was, so I guess there's some reasoning to why he's so famous now.
But no, this is not 'the best drama ever' 'high-quality acting' bla bla. It's just a drama with two good looking leads, a somewhat unique storyline, and a free pass to ship two men because the original storyline has these characters in an actual relationship. Just know that there's also a lot of inexperienced acting, low budget extras and CGIs, forced fanservice by way of OOC lovey-dovey glances from Xiao Zhan to WYB, and a typical plotline of good guy forced to turn evil, rather than the original good guy forced to create evil, which is what makes both the novel and the anime so much greater.
I was looking forward to this one since JJH is my favorite actress but one episode in and I'm not impressed. Like the comment below mentioned, biggest flaw of this drama is the directing. The shots, angles, movements, it wasn't done in a way that was comfortable to follow. It felt rather messy and too busy at times. A lot of the nature settings felt unnatural too as well as the cgi and effects. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. The cast was great tho, definitely no complaints about that. Regarding the story, it's a bit too soon to say but I'm not sure how I feel about the reveal at the end. I would've preferred it without the supernatural twist tbh
2 episodes in and I'm really not liking the flashy dramatic editing and music choices. Reminds me a lot of Indian dramas. I don't know if this is more common with cdramas since I haven't seen much but I wish they went for a different approach. I'm intrigued tho, can't wait for the female characters to get close haha
