HOW I STARTED TO LOVE ASIAN DRAMAS

I was just a first grader back in 2003 when Meteor Garden first aired, dubbed in my native language. I was immediately captivated by the characters—especially Dao Ming Si, portrayed by the legendary Jerry Yan. The show aired in the afternoons, just minutes after my classes ended. I remember rushing home, eager not to miss a single scene.

My dad supported my growing obsession—he bought me posters (the cloth kind, not the paper ones, lol), stickers, and postcards of F4. When Meteor Garden ended, my love for Asian dramas didn’t. I went on to watch Lovers in Paris, Memories in Bali, A Love to Kill, Full House, and The Four Sisters—all of which aired locally and kept the passion alive.

Fast forward to 2006: Princess Hours (Goong) aired on local TV, and I was hooked. I followed the love story between the Crown Prince and Princess religiously. It was also the first time I experienced second lead syndrome—I fell head over heels for Kim Jeong Hoon’s character, only for him to end up alone.  But ofcourse my heart was for Ju Ji Hoon - Prince Lee Shin's character. I love the drama so much i still watch it from time to time even now in 2025.

That drama pushed me deeper into the K-drama world. I started researching titles online and asked my aunt, who lived in a bigger city, to buy me DVD copies. She did, and I began binge-watching everything I could get my hands on. That’s when I also discovered how beautiful K-drama OSTs were. I used LimeWire (ancient internet folks know this struggle 😅) to download the songs—and that’s how I discovered Super Junior and officially became a K-pop fan.

Today, I don't just watch K-dramas—I’ve expanded to Taiwanese, Chinese, Thai (lakorns), and Japanese dramas too. What started as an after-school routine turned into a lifelong passion for Asian entertainment. Ive met a lot of good friends both off and online because of kdrama and kpop. I would be happy to get to know more friends around the world who share the same passion so hit the message button and lets be friends!
