No that's not the original ending, in the novel they end together so its a he but I think this series did the HE better. Also it was earlier adapted into a Chinese movie(I am not aware of any Japaneseadaptations) and its an open end
Done with this. Overall to me it was pretty engaging, pacing was very good and ending was satisfying, they deserved that happy ending after all the sufferings, they definitely are each other's cure and poison.
