Is this good? Is it worth watching?
Honestly, No. It's trying too hard to be funny instead of actually being funny. It's choppy, and you have no idea what the motivation of anyone is. I will admit that I prefer historical dramas with a more serious undertones and a bit of realism but it's not like I hate comedy either. This just feels too low budget for a 45 minute drama. It's not even the cinematography, the visuals are great but WHO WROTE THAT SCRIPT? AI?

I didn't read the synopsis. But the first couple of minutes left me with no expectations of this drama. I have…
And it got worse each episode...The fish CGI had me time travelling to the early 2000s with how bad it was.

Yes… i felt like the intro eliminated a lot of potential suspense by laying out certain scenes from the get…
I'd really be thinking she's so "dramatic" 😭

As a novel reader, I disagree. I don’t fancy the chances and I think the pace does hurt He Yan’s motives,…
But that's the thing, my expectations were minimal, as I already said it's my least favourite of the books, I don't even remember it that clearly to be honest but what I'll never forget is the painful way she died...which they erased...hence diluting the viewers' rage towards her family's 'boiling the hound after catching the rabbit' treatment....All I feel for her is a bit sorry but none of that burning rage I felt when reading the book. I know you can't exactly have the novel 100% made into a show but doing things halfway is worse than not doing at all.

I haven’t read the novel yet (though I definitely plan to 🤭), so I’m genuinely curious — why do people…
I know, but I'm struggling to connect with the MC. Because its so rushed, I don't believe any of it. I know its fiction, I know it's fake but it's the producers job to make me believe what they are telling me even when we all know its not real. For me, that's what separate the 'great dramas' from the 'I'm so bored anything will do' dramas. I don't feel sad for He Yan, I don't like or dislike her or feel any particular way about her, that's my main problem.

Here's the thing, as a novel reader, 'Rebirth of the Star General' is my least favourite of the author's works. So I wasn't really as hyped as I was for 'The Double, but considering how amazing The Double was, I still had some expectations! Like most of the MCs in the author's work, her ending was the height of tragedy. He Yan was a proud general. She would have willingly died for her country but instead, she had her accolades stolen, was crippled by her family, and died not as she lived but as some insignificant postscript in some man's backyard, knowing her family & husband perpetuated her misery while gnawing on the bones of her hard work. You couldn't help but feel her pain, her humiliation at dying such an ignoble death. Watching her start from scratch, from being stuck in the body of a pampered young lady to a powerhouse in her own right, you couldn't help but cheer for her.
So what in the flying hell is this show? The first episode, in my opinion, is the most important; it needs to get us invested in your protagonist and make us fall in love with them. I did not fall in love with this He Yan, I didnt even pity her. I was too busy trying to follow the disjointed storyline. I'm left wondering how the hell people who didn't read the book actually make heads or tails of anything. It feels like they were in a rush to get the leads together and 'start the actual story', they didn't bother with an actual believable backstory. They could do 'The Double' justice, even without the rebirth. They didn't eliminate Jiang Li's tragedy so why did they think He Yan's pain didn't matter?

Coming from a novel reader.. is anyone else disappointed with the pacing of the show? I feel like scenes are all…
My disappointment is beyond! I'm not even mad they got rid of the rebirth, but if they were going to eliminate that section why didn't they work extra hard to create a believable storyline? Too much happened in the first episode, its like they were in a rush to just 'get her in the army already!' I dont even have time to feel bad for her circumstances because everything is just happening so quickly.

Because of the plotholes....Since they removed the rebirth element, instead of finding another way to make the whole story make sense (like they did in The Double) they just decided to carry on....so the story reads like those 12 minutes cellphone dramas without a proper script. I watched the first episode and I also felt let down.

After seeing how well "The double" was live actioned, I can't wait for this one! Hopefully we are lucky,
while this one is airing one of the authors other works gets picked up until we've seen Lu Tong, Empress Shen and Jiang Ruan on screen.... There's only so many times I can reread guys... author-sama's work is phenomenal!
