COMPELLING , MANIPULATIVE YET VULNERABLE
I might have rated this even higher if President Fan and Director You had not ended up together. YES, I SAID WHAT I SAID.
This series essentially did not needed a happy ending (if not for the novel). Just needed a happy You Shu Lang. (at least for me).
The story surrounds around a obsessive Thai-Chinese conglomerate Fan Xiao who meets You Shu Lang through a car accident.
Fan's initial intentions were selfish, to meet his own desires, manipulate Shu Lang's life and disrupt his current relationship. But somewhere in between things get complicated as he develops feelings he never intended to.
But Fan Xiao is only accustomed to control one's life and relationship and not actually to be genuinely in love. Therefore caring and loving another person truly becomes challenging for him and becomes his greatest vulnerability.
On the other side, You Shu Lang is a man who lives with dignity ,values, ethics and molarity and believes that kindness is what makes a good man & even goes out of his way to help others when in need. But he himself isn't a shallow person either. He's witty enough and emotionally strong to point out the reasons why Lu Zhen broke up with him.
Trusting President Fan was the mistake that he did that costed to lose soo much in his life. Imagine someone you shared your vulnerabilities with, no matter what you put faith in that person and imaging a future with them and all the other person did is to manipulate you into his world, break your relationship apart, tear you down, even ruin you, lie to you constantly, has your videos and act like a saint who did nothing.
Bodhisattva who?
It would have been better if they named this series as "The Orchestrated Relationship", though it sounds stiff, it matches very well with the series.
Yes, both of them have their own traumas from their childhood, but that isn't any reason for Fan Xiao to hurt Shu Lang. I was genuinely confused of some incidents which happens at 11-14 eps. Shu Lang could have been more cruel to Fan instead of getting himself confined(or imprisoned) inside Fan's house.
Heartbreaking scene for me is when Fan Xiao confines himself to a room of 4 walls, which is full of disruptive and depressing drawings, empty match boxes everywhere, illusioned himself as drowing in that room full of water and lighting a matchstick ,hoping for a light in that darkness and banging his head against a wall, untill it bleeds.
Not gonna lie,it was a series I dropped right after 2 eps for no reason and saw 3 to 15 + special ep in just one go. It had that potential to bring more angst and show redemption arc which they actually failed to show us/make us feel.
