Nana is a Josei manga not Shojo. The difference is that Josei manga's have a mature vibe into them so it goes to the dark style a little.

Taiga can be loosely translated as "Big River" or "Great River", it refers to time, the big flowing of time as we watch it through a very big river. It's a metaphor decribes the time passing by. Not every period Japanese drama a taiga. Period dramas are called "jidaigeki"
