I'm on ep 4 and the FL went to visit her parents but found out her parents don't exist in the timeline that she's…
I don’t see this as a “it was all a dream” situation. When she goes to 1983 and her parents don’t exist, that’s a huge clue that this isn’t her original timeline. It feels more like a parallel universe where events are similar but not identical. That would explain the differences and also make the story more meaningful, because her experiences there are actually real, just in a different timeline.
This is one of the best Chinese movies I’ve watched, simple but deeply emotional. If you love real, heartfelt stories, you should definitely give it a watch.
I want to watch this because of Zhang Linghe and the high score, but I'm afraid this falls into certain category…
See dear If you’re watching The Best Thing mainly for Zhang Linghe and the high rating, I’d say it leans more toward the slower, healing-type dramas. So if you found shows like Amidst a Snowstorm of Love or Love Me Love My Voice boring, there’s a chance you might feel the same here too. It’s more about emotions, daily life, and gentle romance rather than a strong, fast-moving plot like Love Is Sweet or Princess Royal. So it really depends on your mood—if you’re okay with a calm, slow-burn story, you might enjoy it, otherwise it may not be your type.
And her hardwork after is all gone because they made it just a long dream. Why the scriptwriters always go to…
I get why it feels frustrating 😔 But even if her hard work “disappears,” the story still shows her growth, courage, and smart choices. That journey alone is inspiring and worth enjoying.
Haha, I get why you’re confused 😅Dream of Golden Years isn’t a real time-travel story. The “transmigration”…
😂Haha yes, pretty much 😅 The ending is really open to interpretation—think parallel timelines and “what-ifs.” You can just enjoy it without stressing too much and work in peace!
I'm only at episode 14 but after seeing the drama ending and them changing it different from the novel, I'm dropping…
Honestly, the whole drama is really great! The ending feels rushed, probably because of censorship, but the story, characters, and journey are still amazing. Definitely worth watching for the great storyline.
i think the main plot is really about her stepping up in the present. she was always capable but lacked confidence…
Yeah, totally! The present timeline lets her grow and gain confidence. If it was all set in ’83, it would’ve been a whole different story with more family and social struggles.
The ending is so sad, and it leaves so many questions unanswered. So does that mean the present and past timelines…
I totally get your feelings 😢 The past (1983) and present timelines seem to be separate, not a loop. Xia Xiaolan’s life in the present basically disappears, so only Xiliang really connects both timelines. That’s why her hard work there feels “lost,” and we never see how Cheng explains it. Honestly, the story would have been much simpler and satisfying if it was just a straightforward 80s–90s rags-to-riches story with a smart, hardworking female lead. The transmigration made the ending sad and confusing, even though the rest of the drama was so inspiring.
so zhou cheng time travels at the end?"The moment he saw her, he called out her name, Xia Xiaolan. And still…
Haha, I get why you’re confused 😅
Dream of Golden Years isn’t a real time-travel story. The “transmigration” is just a way to show Xia Xiaolan’s second chance to live smarter in 1983. Zhou Cheng doesn’t actually travel through time.
The rooftop scene is emotional—it’s him remembering her and their promise, not literal time travel. The ending is still happy and grounded.
Just a thought... why not just do a whole drama set in 1983?! Why the need for transmigration? If the main plot…
I understand what you mean, and I kind of agree. The transmigration part felt very rushed and not really important to the story. They showed it for just a few seconds, and then everything focused on the 1983 timeline. Because of that, it didn’t feel necessary at all.
The story in 1983 was already strong enough to stand on its own. The female lead’s maturity, smart decisions, and calm nature could have easily been shown as part of her personality. Not every strong character needs a “past life” explanation. Sometimes good writing is enough to make it believable.
I think the idea of transmigration was used to explain why she thinks differently from others and handles situations better. But since they didn’t develop that part properly, it felt more like an extra detail than an important plot point.
In the end, focusing only on the 1983 setting would have made the drama feel more natural and smooth. The transmigration concept wasn’t bad, but the way it was used made it feel unnecessary.
Dream of Golden Years is a really beautiful and heartwarming drama. The story feels simple but very meaningful, showing love and life in a mature and realistic way. The chemistry between the main characters is natural and comfortable, not forced at all. What makes it special is how they understand and support each other through every situation. Every character is well-written and adds something important to the story. The emotions feel real, and many moments stay with you even after the drama ends. Overall, it’s a calm, touching, and satisfying watch that leaves a warm feeling in your heart.
