Absolute disappointment

A huge disappointment. Spring of the Blade had all the ingredients to be a solid revenge drama, but its execution ends up being extremely uneven and, especially in the final stretch, deeply frustrating.

The plot becomes very repetitive: too many family intrigues, endless conversations, and conflicts that drag on without adding anything new. The story keeps going around in circles, and the revenge storyline gradually loses its impact.
The ending of Xie Shu, the grandmother, and the entire scheme behind everything feels rushed and quite disappointing. And, personally, I wasn't convinced by the female lead either. I really like this actress, but here I found her performance overly stiff and solemn: she remains almost completely expressionless, even during the action scenes, and keeps the same serious expression for much of the series, which takes a lot of the emotion out of many scenes. On top of that, there was practically no chemistry with her male lead, which also made it difficult for me to enjoy their relationship.

And what I found most infuriating was Li Cong Xin's fate. After giving everything for Qingyuan, even being willing to give up his position as heir for her, he ends up being deceived and married to Qingru as a result of the switch. But the truly absurd part comes afterwards: the series expects us to accept that this relationship can somehow become a happy ending. From the very beginning, Qingru has been portrayed as manipulative, malicious, and deeply toxic, and everything she has done is fundamentally incompatible with the level of trust a relationship would need to work. Having the final episodes suddenly soften her character with a rushed redemption arc and then pair her happily with Li Cong Xin is not only unbelievable, but deeply unsatisfying. They are insulting the intelligence of the viewers.

In the end, this was a story with an appealing premise and a good setting that, for me, gets lost in repetitive plotlines, unconvincing decisions, and an overly rushed resolution. It had the potential to be so much more.

Against the Current: A Fascinating Protagonist Who Ultimately Becomes Difficult to Understand

Against the Current starts from a very appealing premise. Lanxiang is an intelligent, educated, and extraordinarily rational woman who, after her family’s downfall and humiliation, finds herself trapped in a marriage she initially does not want. Her conflict with Jinqi is particularly interesting because he is not simply the man who forces her into marriage: he is also the man who, when her family is in a vulnerable position, refused to marry her, only to later use the power of the imperial edict to impose that very marriage. It is therefore understandable that Lanxiang carries resentment and maintains an enormous emotional distance.

In fact, if the series had wanted to tell a story of revenge, it would have had an excellent foundation. But the story seems to want to go much further: to turn that forced relationship into a genuine love story while, at the same time, presenting Lanxiang as an example of female empowerment.

And this is where the problems begin.

Lanxiang is a complex character. She is capable of going to extraordinary lengths for the women around her, but when it comes to Jinqi, she seems to put up an almost impenetrable wall. He makes his feelings very clear, pursues her, waits for her, gives in and tries to get closer to her, while she rarely allows us to see what she truly feels. This is not about demanding a passionate relationship or turning her into someone she is not. The problem is that the series never really shows us the moment when resentment gives way to affection, and affection eventually becomes love.

That is why their first time together feels so strange. After so many years of marriage, it should feel like the culmination of an emotional journey. Instead, the scene gives the impression that they are simply going to “do their duty” because that is what is expected of them, and I find that rather sad. At first, you might think it is simply because she is an emotionally restrained character. But then you see how she behaves when she has to help women in trouble, and the lack of consistency becomes much more noticeable.

Perhaps that is why she creates such a contradictory impression: we want to admire her for her strength, but sometimes we wish she were a little less perfect, less rational, and more human.

Lanxiang teaches the other women to choose their own paths and not simply accept what others have decided for them. And yet she ultimately becomes a wife, mother, and matriarch within a family structure that, in principle, represents precisely what she was trying to escape.

That would not necessarily be a problem. An independent woman can absolutely choose to be a wife, a mother, and a matriarch. But the series has to show us that she chose it. And that is where something is missing once again.

Because if what we are watching is a revenge story, then having children and building a family life with Jinqi becomes difficult to understand. And if it is not revenge, but rather the story of a woman who eventually comes to love the man who initially forced her into marriage, then we need to see that process.

The series manages to show us perfectly how Lanxiang changes the lives of the women around her, but never manages to show us with the same clarity how she changes on the inside.

Very entertaining

The only real issue I had with this series was the lack of physical transformation for the protagonist; the fact that her appearance remained virtually unchanged from before the calamity to after felt like a missed opportunity, which slightly brought down the plot's score for me. Everything else, however, is absolute perfection. It’s never dull or tedious; instead, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, moving you to tears of frustration while offering genuine moments of joy as the story unfolds. When you factor in the incredible performances by two of my favorite actors, I really have no choice but to highly recommend it.

I’ve watched dozens of Chinese fantasy dramas, and this is easily one of the most disappointing. Not only does it rely on those tired and boring memory-loss clichés, but it also features the typical over-the-top protagonist who decides that "protecting" his wife means treating her like trash and humiliating her. I just don't get it. There are at least ten episodes that could have been cut entirely. In short, if you have nothing better to do and feel like giving yourself a headache with a nonsensical plot, this is the show for you. Personally, I would have appreciated a sincere warning so I could have skipped it.

A better title for it would be: "Implausible Fantasy"

It started out quite interesting, but at some point, they completely ruined it, leaving behind a trail of inconsistencies, nonsense, and sheer frivolity in how it handles tragedy. It is a superficial series that tried to cover too much ground and fell completely short. It attempts to sustain the concept of "soulmates" solely through phone calls, completely omitting any realism or human desire between the characters, while dismissing issues as grave as a pregnant woman's grief or an attempted suicide as mere cheap ploys to advance the plot. A pretentious, poorly structured, and perfectly forgettable proposal.
