I think the ending of Ep 40 was just for the drama to pass the censorship. Y'know the authorities (NRTA) don't like reincarnation and stuff like that; they deem it as superstition. Also, I noticed in xianxia/xuanhan dramas, that it's rare for romance between human and non-human (demon, immortal, deity) ends with a wholesome HE, at least OE or subjective HE. So, I appreciate the special episode, though. I think the production company prepared two different endings to tackle the issue of passing censorship and still make the viewers happy.
