Great Underrated Independent Movie

Were it not for Han Hyo Joo I would have never discovered this movie. Thankfully I did! This is a great independent movie with a very unique plot, realistic characters, and superb acting. Most everything about it is understated leading to a subtle sense of curiosity and eventually a subtle yet deep sense of compassion. This movie is far from being a mystery yet there is a constant mysterious aura about the main character that culminates in a heart wrenching reveal at the end..less of a surprise or shock because of how heart wrenchingly realistic it could be…

Pleasantly Surprised! Evoked a Range of Emotions, Worthy of Writing a Review.

This movie had been in my watchlist for a while because of the average user rating. However, it turned out to be a surprisingly good film with a great female lead character and a heartwarming, seemingly realistic, plot. Emotionally I was left with a mix of feelings ranging from a warm, reassuring, confidence in human nature…to a sorrowful empathy for both main characters. It’s one of those movies where after the end I found myself wrestling with these mix of emotions, and found that the best way to do that was to put it into words here…

It may not be for everyone, but if you’re a fan of Independent style movies, then this one is definitely worth watching.

Wrong Choice

This review does include spoilers, so don’t read any further if you don’t want to know one of the major plot twists.

Having watched k-dramas and movies since the early 2000’s , Han Hyo Joo is one of my favorite actresses and was the main reason for watching all 28 episodes. However, from the perspective of a man, I was not happy with her character choosing Hwan instead of Joon Se. For me, in the end it just made her otherwise amazing character seem less genuine and less likable. If she had chosen the “right” guy, then I would have rated this a 9+ instead of a 6.5.

Otherwise, it was entertaining, fun, very much a soap opera, and probably only worth watching now (2023 or later) if you’re a big fan of any of the actors.

Stands the test of time

Although made in the late 1950’s this movie still stands the test of time. The acting and aesthetic is very retro, but is authentic enough to make it enjoyable. The role of the female lead and her portrayal of it is good enough to carry the whole movie. I imagine that the subject matter was quite controversial for its time, and despite the lack of nudity still feels compelling today.

If you’re looking for a graphically sexual movie, then this is not it. If your looking for a glimpse into the past with a dramatic scandal that is entertaining and enjoyable, then it’s worth the less than hour and a half to watch.

Although the circumstances of the storyline can be a bit sad and dark, my favorite aspect of the story is the bond between the two female leads which is deeply compassionate and heartwarming. This is a drama with a realistic setting, slow pace, and nuanced relationships. The acting is superb, and the focus on mostly female familial relationships was refreshingly unique. It brought me to tears more than a few times.

If your looking for a drama in the true sense of the word, then this is for you. If your looking for fantasy or an exaggerated love story then this is not for you.
