I understand your frustration. For me considering it's a slow burn, early 30's is not late. Just my opinion. I like this pace though. They are already acting like couple.

I don't feel like it's rushing or gonna rush. They are already acting as couple already...going on the pace. I think they gonna kiss on early 30 episodes. Moreover this drama is not romantic centric but perfectly mixed with romance.

It's a word play honestly. There is lot of 'read between lines' there. Moreover I don't think he is seeing her as a pawn (literally) , duke never told emperor lot of things like he never told she is not jiang li etc. It's a way to avoid some suspicious things. Also the pawn word is like I'm giving my life to you / I trust you/ I can help you in your schemes (both). Moveover she needed him in her schemes & he too but they are taking care of each other a lot & helping each other. Personally I think it is a teasing love word /joke between them.
