That I get. He is staying away because he thinks she's happily married so he doesn't want to get her involved. But what is her reason because I'm sure she sees him fighting for justice and getting in trouble. Why not meet him? Maybe I missed something?

I think you are the one who is misunderstanding him, I think he has every intention of doing all that, but maybe…
I don't think he's double-faced. He loves the princess but ultimately he wouldn't harm her. And I haven't seen any evidence to doubt him. Even after ep 12, I feel he is being misjudged. I'd be very surprised if I'm wrong about this.
