There’s a not particularly valid assumption here, which is that there was one original text of the Bible and that there has only been one version at a time of it. That has never really been the case.

Moreover, debate over whether or not particular passages or even entire books should or should not be included continued, with attempts made to correct portions of the Bible based on new translations from source texts. For example, Catholics and Orthodox traditions include a number of books as part of the Old Testament which Protestants reject, though sometimes include in their Bibles as the Apocrypha. And, of course, since languages differ, every translation potentially puts different shades of meaning on the same passage.
So, then, it’s not that the Bible has been modified. It’s that there’s a many-stranded history of multiple Bibles which scholars and theologians have tried to perfect based on earlier texts which range from the locally preferred to the demonstrably imperfect to the politically inconvenient (political concerns, for example, are notable in the translation of the King James version). There’s no original, only an endless quest for what seems to be the best way of capturing the meaning of a nonexistent, idealized text.
