I have only read until episode 3 in the drama. I would say read the novel first coz you get the character background and the idea of it. Also it’s pretty small. The drama script has the same character traits for the majority. Some are completely different (for example fangchun’s character), some are new characters. Xu Kai’s character in the novel didn’t have much except he is tough, scary, smart, strong and scheming. But in the novel it’s more detailed and he’s THE BIGGEST flirt. Spoiler- unlike the novel, in the script (episode 1-3) it mentions a lot how he spends time with courtesans, visits brothels, super flirty though he’s under disguise as a lazy corrupt official And I’m curious to see how they will pull it off without rubbing it in the wrong ways of viewers.
ZY’s character is pretty much the same for far except she’s 19 y.o in the drama. But I have to say, there’s a lot of heart fluttering moments right from episode 1. I can’t imagine how great the chemestry will be.
