You're assuming a direct causal relationship between exposure to gay content and increased censorship

The censorship of gay content in China was a consequence of the Chinese government's approach to media regulation. Communist parties see non-conforming beliefs and behaviors as a threat to the stability of the state and traditional family structures. They would have banned gay content, regardless of the level of public outcry

"So you think shoving gay dramas down people throats will bring about change? Question, do you live in a highly homophobic country?"

The question wasn't directed towards me. With your permission, I would like to respond and share my experience

I'm an ex-Muslim from a Muslim country. Despite the risks of arrest and execution, I came out to my family. At first, my decision was met with resistance and hostility. Family would question my identity and threaten to report me to the authorities

Over time, their attitudes changed. I witnessed firsthand the potential for dialogue and exposure to diverse gay stories to act as a catalyst for change. I believe in change at an individual and societal level

Progress is a messy, non-linear process. Different countries have different cultural and political contexts, and what happened in one country (China) won't translate to another (Korea). Korea is at a different point in its journey than China or other Asian countries

Don't you find it weird that it's mostly BL fans that complain about intimacy like kisses and sex? like non bl…
"BL is rooted in fantasy specifically catered to straight women"

Every "romance" is created with a female audience in mind. This doesn't mean that BL can't be enjoyed by the gay community. Some of us are gay and enjoy BLs for their positive depictions of gay relationships

"Directors refuse to hire openly gay actors for main roles"

The industry will be more inclusive as time goes on

"BL is not the height of LGBTQ+ representation"

BL is a gateway or glimpse into a world where gay love and relationships are normalized, unlike mainstream media where gay couples are underrepresented, peripheral, or subject to the "bury your gays" trope. It has its unique role to play in promoting understanding and acceptance of gay experiences. I've met people who have become more open-minded thanks to the genre

"... non of this "it's about respect""

Adaptations of gay stories often don't stay true to the source material. They erase or minimize the gay themes and characters. It is disrespectful. We are calling a spade a spade

Because in a romantic dance of two men, the ballroom of heteronormativity is disrupted and thrown into a tizzy. One partner spinning into traditionally feminine twirls (adopting the role of a woman) doesn't change it. The absence of a woman rings loud and clear: this is no "straight" waltz. The presence of two men toe-tapping to their own beat challenges gender roles, no matter what rhinestones or lace graces the stage

Fetish is turning a gay romance into a bromance.
Changing a story to be gay is a "fetish," and changing it back is "going back to its roots?" That’s like a tree trying to grow back to its seed. Pretty unnatural, if you ask me

A gay story doesn't fetishize gay relationships any more than a "straight" story fetishizes "straight" relationships, which, by the way, makes “Dude in Me” an hour-long commercial for "straightness"

"Suffering from racial discrimination? Live in a different country!"

We live in a society that's not always accommodating. The fight against gay erasure requires more than a change of channel

Everything is wrong with "straight" media

"Heterophobic"

You're mistaking my criticism of the "straight" lifestyle for a fear of "straight" identifying people. I'm not afraid of you. I'm pointing out that your lifestyle has been glorified for far too long

What controversy? The gangster wasn't in a relationship with a high school boy

The other high school boy's "soul" returned to its rightful owner, and with it, a newfound clarity and a heart overflowing with love. In the wake of this reunion, the two high school boys looked into each other's eyes and saw the spark of something more than "just friendship"

I don't see anything controversial here

Fetish is turning a gay romance into a bromance.
A story turning a "straight" character into a gay one is a "fetish," you say? And turning a now gay character "straight" is, what, a cultural cleansing? You're standing in a puddle of hypocrisy. This is a "fetish," too

"... took it out "

Adaptations that wholly diverge from the "straightness" of the original material are rare. A heteronormative subtext would be present, even when not explicitly stated

Gay identities and relationships aren't superfluous or irrelevant for them to be removed in order to focus more on the "story." They are part of the story

A history of involvement in BL doesn't immunize a director or producer from making homophobic decisions in their current work

It's possible that the director or producer is homophobic; that their previous BL works were driven by economic opportunism rather than genuine commitment to the genre. Upon recognizing the monetary limitations imposed by societal homophobia, they decided to remove the BL elements from their next project in pursuit of greater financial gain

None of this excuses the removal of BL elements. The value of representation can't be sacrificed at the altar of commercial viability. What you're implying is morally bankrupt and, frankly, short-sighted

The original story had a BL focus. The removal of BL elements in an adaptation misrepresents an author's artistic vision and erases gay voices in media

This author was later influenced by financial considerations. Their approval of homophobic censorship doesn't absolve the adaptation from criticism or reflect the interests of the community the story was originally about

"Stop being childish"

It's the height of irony that you would accuse us of childishness for being passionate about BL and standing up for what we believe in

The act of dismissing or belittling us is childish in and of itself

"Straight" media romanticizes the oppressive heteronormative paradigm and indoctrinates girls and women into servitude

Under the thumb of the heteropatriarchy, girls and women aren't capable of exercising agency or valid consent in their interactions with boys and men. They are reduced to objects of male desire and conquest that are denied the ability to choose alternatives to their expected "straight" lifestyle

I could argue that all interactions between men and women are tainted by abusive power imbalances. Even seemingly "innocuous" activities are sexual assault and a violation of a woman's body

Before you start casting stones at BL, consider that your "pro-straight" mansion is built on quicksand

Not all art that's provocative or controversial has value. Art might be deliberately offensive or provocative for the sake of shock value or attention-seeking, without intellectual merit. In these cases, censorship or "thought policing" is justified to prevent the spread of harmful, offensive material
