Synopsis of Hunting Lies
Lin Yanting, a psychologist burdened with a secret, possesses exceptional skills and a keen understanding of human nature. However, fate seems to be cruelly targeting his family and destroying his life. To clear his father's name, he joins the police force as a consultant, solving bizarre cases and uncovering the truth behind the deaths of his loved ones. Faced with a confrontation between brothers and a fated hunt, Lin Yanting hunts for the truth in a jungle of lies, tearing apart the web of destiny.
The story begins with a shocking bombing at a hearing five years prior. Superintendent Lin Qian tragically died in the incident and was officially deemed negligent, his reputation tarnished. His son, psychologist Lin Yanting (Cheng Yi), firmly believes in his father's innocence and has never given up on tracking down the true culprit codenamed "DR" for years.
Lin Yanting is a character rife with contradictions and tension, possessing extreme contrasts between his two sides. By day, he is a rational, restrained, and professionally authoritative elite police consultant, lean, refined, and wearing gold-rimmed glasses, displaying exceptional professionalism. However, once he delves into the heart of a case or enters the darkness of night, his cold, dark, and vengeful nature is revealed. He possesses top-notch psychological profiling abilities, acting as a natural "human lie detector," able to spot any lie at a glance, while also being ruthless, accurate, and fast in combat. However, his physical weaknessβasthmaβadds a deep sense of vulnerability and tragic fate to his tenacious pursuit of the killer.
To uncover the truth, Lin Yanting, as a police consultant, teams up with detective Li Bailang. Li Bailang harbors resentment towards the Lin family due to his wife's death, and his personality carries a distance and distrust towards Lin Yanting, leading to initial tension and conflict between the two.
During the investigation, their antagonism evolves into tacit understanding, jointly solving multiple serial crimes related to "DR." However, as the investigation deepens, they realize there's more to the case than meets the eye, and "DR" may merely be a puppet. A much larger conspiracy gradually surfaces, with someone secretly manipulating them by using them to pave their own path to revenge.
He also did narration in podcastππππππππππππ his voice is super gentle and healinggππππππππ https://weibo.com/2519542552/5296274595119204 "Imagine yourself as a ship, sailing through mountains, valleys, and plains, across rivers and into the sea, from one shore to the other. Now, the Yuan River and the young man have gone their separate ways. Where will that ship ultimately reach? ChengYi doesn't know, and perhaps doesn't need to know. Let's ride along, admire the flowers, sing, and journey on."
Cheng Yi Returns to Western Hunan, Reliving His Childhood Again
πButterfly Village, western Hunan
Upon setting foot on the land of western Hunan, all of Cheng Yi's senses are awakened: bamboo forests, birdsong, insect chirps, the scent of dew mixed with earth and grass, a bowl of noodles in the morning, the smoke rising from the chimneys, and the persistently high humidity in the air. In a sense, his hometown is the sum of all these feelings; all the subtle, individual, and indescribable sensations intertwine to form the "pure" western Hunan in Cheng Yi's heart.
In late spring, in western Hunan, several days of continuous rain washed over the entire Dehang Grand Canyon, making it appear as if it had been cleansed. The mountains were verdant, the water a clear blue, and the vegetation shone with a vibrant green, every nook and cranny radiating new life.
Although it's not peak tourist season in western Hunan, tourists can still be seen everywhere, from Fenghuang Ancient Town to the surrounding areas of the capital, Jishou. Speaking with accents from all over the country, they converge, disperse, and then reunite at the Dehang Grand Canyon Scenic Area, queuing to visit Tianwen Platform. Tianwen platform is the highest point in the canyon, and as its name suggests, it's a natural stone platform jutting out from the cliffs, suspended on three sides, surrounded by towering cliffs. When the clouds and mist surge, it seems to connect with the sky. More than two thousand years ago, it was on this very stone platform that Qu Yuan posed a hundred powerful questions to the heavens, leaving behind the timeless masterpiece, "Heavenly Questions."
πXinzhai Village, Aizhai Town
Cheng Yi was also one of the tourists. The term "tourist" might not be entirely accurate; a more fitting description would be "returning guest"βthis place could be considered half his hometown. He was born and raised in Huaihua, a small city in southwestern Hunan, only an hour or two's drive from the capital of Xiangxi Prefecture. The two places are not only geographically close, but historically they share the same ancestry, drink from the same river, and enjoy the same customs and cuisine. From a cultural and geographical perspective, both belong to the "Greater Xiangxi" region.
Stepping onto his hometown soil, all of Cheng Yi's senses were awakened. "When I woke up in the morning, my ears were filled with the chirping of birds. When I drew back the curtains, I could see the mountain mist, the morning dew mixed with the scent of earth and grass, emitting a unique fragrance. And the smoke rising from the chimneysβI knew it was the smell of home the moment I smelled it..." Cheng Yi rarely returns to Xiangxi at this time of year, yet he felt no sense of unfamiliarity. Everything before himβthe mountains and rivers, the vegetation, and even the persistently high humidity in the airβwas familiar. Without needing any guidance, he walked directly from the scenic area entrance to the foot of Tianwen platform, as if he had been there countless times before.
The path to Tianwen Platform is a narrow stone staircase, carved into the mountainside, worn smooth and shiny by countless feet, its edges covered with damp moss. Occasionally, a corner of azalea peeks out from the waist-high bushes, its color shimmering brightly amidst the surrounding lush greenery and gray foliage. At the end of the staircase lies Tianwen Platform. Cheng Yi strolls up, stops in the center, and slowly scans the mountains with his gaze. Occasionally, he strikes a pose for a photo, turns, paces, arms outstretched, and for a moment, he even leaps into the air like a child.
The sky was misty, and the massive, layered mountains, as if carved by a knife and axe, plunged straight down to a bottomless canyon. Some people, afraid of heights, felt their legs go weak and said, "We're not going up." Cheng Yi was also a little afraid of heights, and he avoided any rides involving heights at amusement parks. But now, standing on a giant rock with three sides suspended in the air, with clouds swirling beneath his feet, he was as calm as if he were taking a stroll in his own backyard. He himself was somewhat puzzled. "It's strange," he said. "In the film, I dared to go on wire stunts no matter how high, flying around in the air and doing somersaults, but for some reason, I wouldn't dare to do any of those rides at amusement parks." He paused, as if seriously considering it, and finally concluded, half helplessly and half frankly, "Maybe the character told me he could do it, he was capable, he had to be able to do it, so I did it. But in real life, I can't, and I know I don't need to convince myself, so I don't often try those things in real life."
In the afternoon, after descending from Tianwen Platform to the Aizhai Scenic Area, the fog dissipated somewhat, and the deep red bridge of the Aizhai Bridge flashed past the window from time to time. "This place is getting better and better." One of Cheng Yi's most direct impressions of returning to Xiangxi this time was: the landscape of his hometown remained the same, but it was clearly different. As a child, he had visited Fenghuang a few times. Back then, the ancient town was a quiet little town, with far fewer tourists than it is now. The streets were mostly frequented by local Miao people, carrying baskets and hoes, fishing by the stream, or simply gathering fruit and firewood from the mountainsβliving a very down-to-earth life. In the past couple of days, he'd seen many new buildings, and a plethora of delicious food and fun activities. Many new restaurants had opened along the streets, offering creative dishes he'd never seen before. Various scenic spots had also developed a dazzling array of new experiences: glass walkways, canyon rafting, Miao embroidery, batik, and theatrical performancesβ¦ Cheng Yi acknowledged these changes. People were growing, and Xiangxi was emerging from the deep mountains, transforming from a remote area into a world-class tourist destination, stepping onto a broader stageβhis heart was filled with joy.
The Aizhai Bridge is a microcosm of Xiangxi's development. The perilous of Xiangxi lies in Aizhai, a place historically separated by mountains and rivers, where travel was hampered by thirteen hairpin bends. Fourteen years ago, in the spring, the Aizhai Bridge, spanning 1176 meters and standing 355 meters in the air, opened up a natural barrier, transforming a once impassable chasm into a thoroughfare. The lives of the people of Aizhai gradually unfolded from the folds of the mountains. Now, looking out from the village at the foot of the mountain, two cable towers rise from the summit, steel cables stretching in graceful arcs, and deep red steel trusses suspended in mid-air. The Aizhai Bridge, like a rainbow spanning the sky, stands majestically, exuding a sense of awe and commanding respect. At a moment when no one noticed, a thin line dangled from the bridge, a speck of ink hanging from its end. The rope taut for a moment, then snapped back, swinging in a huge arc in the air. Someone was the first to react, "They're bungee jumping!" Indeed, as Cheng Yi said, there is still much new, fun, and undiscovered potential in western Hunan today. In his school days, he was also a playful and mischievous child. "Back then, I loved observing everything, I was full of curiosity, and I was incredibly energetic, always jumping around like I had ADHD." His home was right by the Yuan River. As soon as school was over, he'd drop his bag and run to the river to swim, play in the water, and catch small fish and shrimp, spending half the day there.
Huaihua is a city built along the river, with the Yuan River flowing through it. Whether it was the village where he lived as a child or the county town where he later moved, Cheng Yi's life was always intertwined with this river. In spring, the river is a clear, greenish-blue, like lustrous jade, but in summer, when the water rises, it turns a thick, muddy yellow. Cheng Yi loved the Yuan River no matter the season. His happiest moments each day were going fishing with his classmates and friends, each with their own homemade fishing rods. His memories are they mostly didnt catch anything, but the satisfaction and joy were so genuine that even more than 20 years later, his voice still carries a pleasant feeling when he speaks of it.
Regarding the Yuan River, Cheng Yi also vividly remembers the small boats on its waterways. "When I was little, I often saw very large ships, and of course, many small boats, those old-fashioned wooden boats, moored along the bank, swaying gently with the current." Later, Cheng Yi traveled to a larger and more distant world; cargo ships on the river and cruise ships at sea roared past him, but whenever he closed his eyes, what he remembered was still that small wooden boat swaying gently on the bank.
There are no boats on this nameless stream, and the water is far less wide than the Yuanjiang River. Only a local man in rubber boots stands fishing in the babbling water. On the opposite bank, a mother goose and her two goslings forage in the grass. Cheng Yi simply watches quietly, feeling an overwhelming sense of tenderness and belonging. "It's like going back to my childhood," he says. "This is what I lived in the old house when I was a child." Back then, there was a similar stream in front of his house, shallow and clear, where clothes and dishes were washed. The house was also an old-fashioned wooden structure, with land in front planted with rapeseed flowers, and a mountain behind where they could pick peaches. He bent down and casually picked a handful of wild grass from the stream. The grass leaves were oblong and felt rough to the touch. "This kind of grass used to grow all over the mountains when I was a child; it holds all my childhood memories."
In late spring in western Hunan, the mountains are green, the water is flowing, and the plants hidden deep in the mountains, along the streams, and in the crevices of the rocks are all busily awakening. Plantain, black nightshade, water hemp, verbena, five-leaf vine, and all kinds of fernsβyou can feel the joy. Everything is growing desperately, trying to grow strong enough before summer arrives. Plants are like this, and so are people. People in the Hunan and Hubei areas generally have a rather impatient character, a kind of "time waits for no one" spirit. Similar to the custom of eating spicy food, this is due to the geographical climate. Summers are extremely hot, and winters are extremely cold. People born and raised in such places naturally have strong personalities. Cheng Yi also has his "hurried" moments. Earlier, to avoid delaying the filming schedule, he hurried down to the stream. It had just rained that morning, and his feet were slippery. He stumbled a couple of steps, and everyone reminded him at the same time. He didn't even look up, casually saying, "It's okay, I grew up here."
Until his teens, Cheng Yi was a child nurtured by these mountains and rivers. After that, he went north to study, and a watershed moment appeared in his life. It was his first time traveling far from home, taking a train alone from Huaihua to Beijing, more than 1,700 kilometers, a considerable distance at the time. His family saw him off at the train station, and the scene before the train departed is still deeply etched in his mind: the station was full of people, noisy and bustling, his family squeezed in the middle, waving goodbye to him. Then the train hummed and pulled away, the noise instantly cut off, and loneliness welled up in his heart.
Leaving home is always like this, a mix of melancholy and hope for a new life. Cheng Yi actively threw himself into it, studying, filming, and moving between various film sets, rarely staying in one place for long. Looking back on those days, he said, "From my teens until now, I've basically been traveling everywhere for work, making the world my home. It wasn't until last year that the pace slowed down a bit. When I first entered the industry, I didn't dare to imagine so much. Sometimes I wanted to stop and rest for a while, but after a good night's sleep, I would be full of fighting spirit again. Everyone has contradictory times. Although I had the thought of slowing down and seeing how things go, time and opportunity won't wait for you. Once you choose to do something, you must do your best to do it well." These past two days, walking on the land of Xiangxi, I often encountered women and aunties in ethnic costumes selling snacks and local specialties, as well as local elderly people. They are all people who are striving for progress amidst countless changes. This is undoubtedly a fundamental aspect of Cheng Yi's character; a fire still burns within him, gently but steadily, maintaining its warmth over time.
This year, during the Spring Festival, Cheng Yi spent a few days in his hometown, truly experiencing the Lunar New Year. He hadn't been able to go home for the holidays several times, and his elders were visibly aging, the marks of time clearly etched on their bodies and movements. Cheng Yi understood this was the natural order, something no one could escape, but even knowing this, he couldn't help feeling a pang of sadness, "Time flies so fast." Over the years, he had maintained a close relationship with his family. When he was working or filming, his grandparents would call him precisely at the right time, not wanting to disturb his work. In Hunan, every family makes stir-fried pork with chili peppers, but Cheng Yi's favorite is still his mother's. It's not just a psychological reason; many people around him have tried it and find it more delicious than restaurant versions. Cheng Yi didn't plan to ask his mother for the secret to making this dishβand it seemed unnecessary. Due to his profession, he had maintained a light diet for many years, and even on his days off, he would only eat spicy food once a week or two, a small consolation to his Hunanese stomach.
Today was that occasional exception. "I was especially happy today. I had a bowl of noodles for breakfast, and for lunch I had local specialty stir-fried pork with chili peppers, along with free-range eggs and some stir-friesβwe Hunanese always like to stir-fry. In the evening, I ate a hot pot of cured meat with the Miao women around the fire pit. I ate seven or eight pieces of that pickled radish, and I just kept eating it." It was truly a long and unforgettable meal, because of the abundance and authenticity of the dishes, and because of the lively and engaged atmosphere among the diners.
πButterfly Village, western Hunan
The dining location was Butterfly Village in Huangcun Village, Aizhai, a Miao village with 78 households, named after the Miao totem "butterfly." Osmanthus trees and chili seedlings grew at the village entrance, and a stone-paved road meandered into the village, with a rooster strutting proudly along the road. Most of the houses in the village were built into the hillside, some renovated in modern styles, others retaining their original appearance. The dining table was set in a dimly lit old wooden house, its color faded, with dried corn and red chilies hanging from the eaves. Cheng Yi and three Miao women sat around the table, in the center of which was a triangular hearth, simmering a pot of cured meat hotpot. Around the square table, stir-fried pork with chili peppers, pickled radishes, pickled mustard greens, bok choy, and fried small fish and shrimp were arranged in a circle. Without much formality, after a few pieces of cured meat and pickled radish, the conversation became more lively. Cheng Yi inquired about the price of the cured meat and the making of glutinous rice wine, and the women responded enthusiastically, constantly piling food onto his plate, their eyes bright and smiles on their lips.
Midway through the meal, someone suggested singing a song. One young woman, chopsticks in hand, started singing a moment ago, and the other two quickly followed. There was no forced performance; it felt like a natural progression of the meal. "The magpie in the tree, chirping away, our honored guest has come to my home today..." The winding melody was like a mountain road; you think you've reached the end, but then another turn reveals another stretch. "Honored guests, let's drink! Our rice wine is fragrant and sweet, it makes your heart swell with joy!" The lyrics were simple, even somewhat clumsy and straightforward, but they warmed the hearts of everyone present.
"Let's have a toast!" Cheng Yi suggested, offering local golden tea instead of wine. The two people, meeting for the first time, found themselves so compatible that the mountain tea truly evoked a sense of the stirring power of wine. That evening, on the way back to Changsha, recalling that extremely "ζ±ζΉ (jianghu, a term referring to the world of martial arts and chivalry)" scene, he couldn't help but sigh, "We're all from western Hunan, from Hunan province, so we should be more genuine, right?"
Over the years, Cheng Yi has traveled to many places, but few can truly be called "travel." Usually, he arrives, starts working, and leaves as soon as work is finished. This magazine shoot was also a rushed trip, without any luggage. He reflects that next time he goes to a new place, perhaps he could allow himself a few days to explore. Whether it's a city or nature, he doesn't have a particular preference for the destination; what he values ββmost is the accommodation and food during the journey. "When I finally get to travel, I just hope to rest well and eat what I want. Besides that, I don't have any particularly high expectations. I don't say 'I must go here today' or 'I must do this or that.'" Similar to a philosophy of life, Cheng Yi believes that setting lower expectations makes it easier to be happy.
"Overall, the happy parts of life always outweigh the unhappy parts." This is a truth about life that Cheng Yi has come to accept in recent years. Of course, life hasn't spared him any special treatment just because he chooses to be an optimist. He also has the fears that everyone has, such as being afraid of the dark and ghosts, and also afraid of failure and being misunderstood. But he knows in his heart that fear is useless. "You can learn to find the switch for fear, and then gently turn it off." The same principle applies to happiness. Cheng Yi believes that happiness also needs to be actively sought out. Once you see it, feel it, reach out and "snap" it, and life will look different.
Before leaving Butterfly Village, Cheng Yi, the Miao woman, and all the staff squeezed in front of the blackened, shiny wooden wall and took a group photo to mark the end of the workday. In the captured image, everyone's face is smiling, and their smiles are genuine. Cheng Yi sits comfortably, raising his hand to give a standard "V" sign.

Regarding the first year of the Hongxi reign, the vast *History of Ming* contains a brief record: "In the fourth month of summer, due to repeated earthquakes in Nanjing, he was ordered to go and defend the city. On the day of Gengchen in the fifth month, Emperor Renzong fell ill, and an imperial edict summoned him back. On the day of Xinchou in the sixth month, he returned to Liangxiang, received the imperial edict, and entered the palace to mourn."
The one ordered to go to Nanjing was a 26-year-old young man. His name was Zhu Zhanji. Logically, the journey should have been smooth and safe, as he was the crown prince appointed by Emperor Renzong, Zhu Gaochi.
However, upon arriving in Nanjing, Zhu Zhanji was ambushed. Before he could recover from the shock, news arrived that his father was seriously ill. To prevent a sudden change in the political situation, he, alone and isolated, had to return to Beijing within fifteen days.
Traveling across thousands of miles of rivers and mountains, through the night, amidst the clamor of wind and the cries of cranes, his life hung by a thread. Traveling north along the Grand Canal, Zhu Zhanji was consumed by grief. The recurring crises, however, allowed him to experience things he could never see in the imperial palace and in imperial edicts: the power struggles of officialdom, the complexities of human relationships and the subtleties of the human heart.
This story, told from fragments of official history, is called *Fifteen Days in Two Capitals*(River of No Return). The original novel was written by Ma Boyong, and the TV series wrapped filming this February. On the day of the official announcement, Cheng Yi, who plays Zhu Zhanji, posted a Weibo post, which included the line: "The journey along the Grand Canal tempered his character, the storms between the two capitals."
"The journey along the Grand Canal" refers to the perils along the canal; "tempering his character" refers to Zhu Zhanji's transformation.
For Cheng Yi, the most moving part of Zhu Zhanji is precisely his "growth." "In this story, Zhu Zhanji isn't a lofty symbol, but a young man suddenly thrown into the mire by fate," he described. "Escape, being shot by an arrow, being relentlessly pursuedβhe becomes more resilient in this extremely cruel trial." Cheng Yi's task was to allow the audience to genuinely feel the character's "growth" through the tightly packed "fifteen days."
On the day filming wrapped, they were shooting the scene of Zhu Zhanji's ascension to the throne. Returning from the storm, clad in imperial robes, he ascended the throne for the first time, his heart filled with complex emotions.
"Fifteen days of hellish life-or-death struggle, finally sitting in that positionβwhen filming wrapped, I felt as if I had truly walked those two thousand miles," Cheng Yi recalled. He is, of course, not Zhu Zhanji, but there is a metaphorical resonance of fate between the character and the actor.
Since his debut in the 2011 TV series *Beauty World*, Cheng Yi's acting career has spanned fifteen years. While not marked by the arduous trials of a military campaign, it has been filled with unspoken joys and sorrows. Driven by passion and unwavering perseverance, he has dedicated himself to one project after another, creating countless memorable characters. The roles of actor and character have intertwined, separated, cycled, and recurred, allowing Cheng Yi to grow personally.
Skillful in acting, measured in life, sometimes immersive, sometimes detached, actor Cheng Yi consistently strives for sincerity and genuine understanding.
Zhu Zhanji's rise and fall were condensed in fifteen days, while Xie Huai'an's impending doom was secretly laid out for over a decade.
In the TV series *The Twenty-Four Strategies of Chang'an*(The Vendetta of An), which aired last December, Cheng Yi portrayed Xie Huai'an, a character with a complex and winding fate. A young man, grieving the massacre of his entire family, changes his name and painstakingly goes into hiding, all to uncover the secrets of the past and avenge his family in the turbulent city of Chang'an.
During filming, Cheng Yi saw Xie Huai'an as "a man steeped in hatred, a man who spent over a decade meticulously planning a deadly scheme." Behind his masterful planning lay a highly tense mind and nerves, for one wrong move could lead to total defeat. And he didn't even have a chance to lose once.
But looking back at *The Twenty-Four Strategies of Chang'an* (The Vendetta of An), Cheng Yi interprets a different nuance in Xie Huai'an. He reads loneliness, he reads compassion; a life sustained by hatred, when all is said and done, reveals its extreme vulnerability. Revenge is achieved, but Xie Huai'an loses far more than he gains.
Cheng Yi frankly stated that his re-examination of Xie Huai'an and "The Twenty-Four Strategies of Chang'an"(The Vendetta of An) stemmed from a long-standing habit. Whenever a work airs, he rewatches it from the audience's perspective. By stepping back and reflecting on the past, he gains a more objective view of the characters and plot, and can identify areas for improvement in his own performance. While filming eventually ends, acting is a continuous process of accumulation.
To prepare for a role, Cheng Yi does extensive pre-production research. Starting with the 2016 TV series "The Legend of Chusen," he began writing notes for his characters. From the subtle details like the strength of their breath and the trembling of their fingertips after poisoning, to the macro-level psychological changes and relationship shifts throughout their lives, he meticulously recorded anything that inspired him.
When discussing these matters, Cheng Yi showed no pride: "All actors do their homework this way. Some acting teachers do it even better than me, preparing more thoroughly." In his view, putting in a little "hard work" for a role is nothing to boast about; it's simply an actor's duty.
For the same reason, Cheng Yi underwent several hours of martial arts training every day for the TV series *To the Mountains and Seas*. The slender Li Lianhua in the TV series *Lotus Building*(Mysterious Lotus Casebook) was also the result of Cheng Yi controlling his diet for three consecutive months.
In Cheng Yi's description, he is "someone who can only focus on one thing at a time." Most of the time, that thing is acting. Only by immersing himself in it can he not merely "play" a role, but naturally "become" the character. With the sincerity of a seeker of truth, his acting has rewarded him with maturity and progress.
At the beginning of his studies, Cheng Yi thought filming would strictly follow the script's sequence. During the filming of his first project, the jump-cut filming made him somewhat nervous. Now, however, no matter which scene is filmed first, he has confidence in himself, ensuring the smoothness and accuracy of the character's emotions.
Beyond specific works, Cheng Yi has developed a deeper understanding of his identity as an actor. "The most attractive aspect of the acting profession is the ability to constantly break boundaries and become someone else," he explains. "Because I'm an actor, I've always thought about what kind of themes and roles can truly resonate with the audience in today's information-saturated environment."
The answer is clear: to resonate with the audience, one must first look inward. Touching stories and logically clear characters are Cheng Yi's consistent standards. "Only when I truly believe that a character is not just a word, can I bring him to life in post-production," he says. As for the present, he wants to try any type of role he hasn't yet attempted.
In recent years, while acting, Cheng Yi has also been exploring another way of telling stories: through songs. In the theme song "Walking the Horizon" for the drama *The Twenty-Four Strategies of Chang'an*, he sings, "Severing the past, parting in life, thousands of miles away, who has left me without a trace?" In the theme song "What's There to Fear?" from the drama *Heaven and Earth Sword Heart*, he sings, "I fear not fate's laughter that I am still young, I fear not a thousand swords piercing my heart, nor the sword drawn from its sheath pointing into the abyss." These words, like a judgment, vividly outline the character's silhouette and foreshadow the plot's development.
Whether filming or singing, Cheng Yi has a clear awareness: "Both forms require finding a genuine moment, a moment where I am not myself, but merely the vessel of the story. The difference lies in the fact that when performing, the actor must let go of their real-life state, even forgetting the existence of 'themselves.' But when singing an OST (original soundtrack), the singer is the storyteller, and also themselves."
"I" and "not-I" are topics frequently discussed in the acting system. Cheng Yi refines his understanding through repeated practice. In his view, his own acting requires mostly introspection, while his singing tends to be more emotionally expressive; when getting into character, he needs to "let go of himself," while singing requires "facing himself." "Listening to my own singing, sometimes I feel it's not perfect. For example, a certain ending note might not be finished perfectly," Cheng Yi frankly admits. "But I've gradually accepted this imperfection. This result contains my true frequency, and listening to the finished product gives me a very magical feeling."
The ancients often summarized the process of enlightenment as "like cutting and polishing jade, like carving and grinding stone." Cheng Yi's reflections on acting all come from years of accumulation and refinement.
As for the source of all this reflection, it all comes down to two words: "human" and "heart."
Last October, in an interview with the People's Daily, Cheng Yi mentioned that he has always remembered the content of his teacher's first lesson when he first entered school: "Be a good person first, then act." The problem is, to truly put this principle into practice, we still need to start with acting.
"A cup of wine in the spring breeze, ten years of lamplight in the martial arts world." The blood-pumping youth is always intoxicated by the pleasure of "a cup of wine," but time will slowly teach him the weight of "ten years of lamplight."
After the finale of "To the Mountains and Seas," (The Journey of Legend), Cheng Yi wrote in his Weibo post: "I once asked myself what chivalry truly is. Later, I came to understand that living in such a beautiful and peaceful world, living each day honestly and earnestly, forms the foundation of chivalry."
The character's life and the experience of performing led Cheng Yi to realize that the outer shell of martial arts is "martial arts," but its core is "chivalry." It is a unique Chinese fairy tale, a spiritual fulcrum for justice and freedom. It doesn't necessarily have to be confined to a specific era or a particular martial arts world; as long as one upholds their inner principles, everyone can be a chivalrous person.
Thus, for actors, life is the nourishment for performance, and performance, in turn, can enrich life.
Cheng Yi poured his heart and soul into his roles and brought the gifts of those roles back into his daily life. He grew up in a warm and loving family and spent a happy childhood in his hometown of Hunan. Whenever he has free time between work, he always likes to go home and visit.
This Spring Festival, Cheng Yi returned home again. His TV drama was playing on television, and his family would gather around to chatβa "traditional activity" for him at home. Previously, Cheng Yi had watched *Lotus Building* (Mysterious Lotus Casebook) with his grandparents. Even after the entire series aired, although his grandmother sometimes called it *Lotus Road*, it didn't stop her from frequently recommending this favorite drama to her friends.
This time, while watching his new drama, his grandmother, who loves to indulge in whimsical thoughts, called to ask, "Does your character survive in the end?" "You have to watch it yourself; I can't spoil it," Cheng Yi replied. The conversation was lighthearted, but their hearts were filled with joy.
The green hills and clear waters of his hometown, the rivers where he could swim, the warm sunshine, and the fruits he could easily pickβthese are precious treasures deep within Cheng Yi's memory. When filming, the lights left on and the meals that they cooked for him also brought him both joy and melancholy.
Cheng Yi enjoys walks with his family, but he also likes to walk alone. With a leisurely stroll, he can relax and find peace in any situation. Whether by the river, in the mountains, or in the city, as long as there's nothing particularly special to do, he's willing to wander aimlesslyβit's his way of recharging.
Sometimes he also feels the changing flow of time: when filming, time flies by unnoticed; when he has a chance to quiet down, memories resurface. In his teens, driven by his dream of becoming an actor, he carried his backpack alone to pursue his inner direction. When he first arrived in Hengdian to film, even for roles with only a few lines, he would return to his hotel every day and repeatedly review the script. Once fearless, he has encountered setbacks and stumbles; now, his spirit is more peaceful, and his resolve is stronger.
Starting with the 2011 television series *Beauty World*, this year marks Cheng Yi's 15th year as an actor. He is grateful to his younger selfβbrave, passionate, and persistentβwhich has led him to experience a completely different life. He is also willing to continue striving, infusing his inner reflections and personal insights into more of his roles.
"When the spotlight is off, I'm just an ordinary person," Cheng Yi stated. From another perspective, the on and off of the lights represent his life as an actor.

"Imagine yourself as a ship, sailing through mountains, valleys, and plains, across rivers and into the sea, from one shore to the other.

This was Cheng Yi's first time visiting any of the filming locations, yet he felt a sense of familiarity and warmth everywhere, a feeling of dΓ©jΓ vu, "like repeatedly returning to my childhood." The most special place was Butterfly Village; he seemed to have a connection with this village. During the filming before dinner, Cheng Yi experienced a "magical" encounter: a large yellow dog suddenly appeared out of nowhere and followed him around several times. The dog looked quite like the "Dahuang" kept by Li Lianhua in the TV series *Mysterious Lotus Casebook*, only it looked a bit older, with streaks of white mixed in with its yellow fur. Cheng Yi joked, "This is what an old 'Dahuang' looks like."

Cheng Yi: Reaching Sincerity Through Performance
In his view, his own acting requires mostly introspection, while his singing tends to be more emotionally expressive; when getting into character, he needs to "let go of himself," while singing requires "facing himself."
"Listening to my own singing, sometimes I feel it's not perfect.
Cheng Yi has acted in two martial arts dramas: *Lotus Building* (Mysterious Litus Casebook) and *To the Mountains and Seas*(The Journey of Legend). He still remembers his first encounter with martial arts: the repeatedly broadcast TV series and the novels of martial arts masters like Jin Yong, Gu Long, and Wen Ruian enriched his youth. In his naivetΓ©, he realized that the world of martial arts was more than just fighting and killing; it was also about priceless bonds of friendship and loyalty. He also vaguely sensed that the martial arts world was vast, unimaginably vast, teeming with heroes, and that stories always ended with heroes sacrificing themselves.
