Yes, Qi Yan is a person who has to supress his emotion because many people watching his every movement. So he must not display any emotion, and wear a "mask" of person who "killed" his own brother for the throne, so he must look coldhearted. So we only know his emotion through his eyes, and it is so subtle, so people who is not focused might miss it.
And he also display a different emotion according the character progress, such as when Qi Yan 8 years ago vs now. Back then he is gentle, warm, and full of youth, and also kind of afraid Qiu Shiliang. But Qi Yan now, he doesn't show any trace of afraid to Qiu Shiliang, in the 1st eps scene, he tested Qiu Shiliang, whether he will received his bow, his expression there slightly show smirk when Qiu Shiliang quicky refused his bow. And in front of him, he show his respect but behind him, he show his contempt. So i think his acting is great and consistent with the story progress and the personality of the character.
And his expression when he interact with Yu'er, because it is the 1st time he meet people with her personality, so he is not prepared & kinda amused, at 1st he is rather cold and awkward & curious to her, and after awhile he slowly adjust and get used/warm up to her. But through the process, he find himself afraid and confused what this emotion would bring to him. Cheng Yi display that emotion accordingly too.
And we will see his various rich emotion throughout the story 😁
