But i think they would deviate some of the story of the novel because the drama is trying to be more accurate to the real historical figure. One of the reason due to censorships system that they have regarding drama that used real person based. But i think, they will also keep some of the background story of each character relationships judging from the trailer so far.
And the drama merged 2 characters of the novel into one, that is Li Rong + Li Yan into Li Yan drama version. And create a different storyline for Li Rong drama version.
And from my opinion only, i think the novel does has an interesting background story but too bad the author not exploring more depth into the story, it actually has potential to explore more rich approach. So i am looking forward to how the drama's scriptwriter bring more depth and complexity to the storyline and characters. After all she did wrote the script for 5 years,,

And i also want to add, the reason why his characters/roles that he portrays are wonderful, is because of Cheng Yi's wonderful interpretation of the roles. We could understand the reason why his role did what he did & think that way. A consistent thinking and action throughout the episodes. Cheng Yi's interpretation is what makes his roles unique and interesting. His acting could make the roles become alive, real, and 3 dimensional (or even 4rd ;D), and we as audiences, would feel sympathetic and connect with his roles. So, i couldn't wait to see his interpretation to many roles in the future ;D Despite his characters would be tragic, happy, or even evil. The more complex, the better ;D It would be a very interesting journey indeed! ;D
And overall i like the drama story, each character is not one dimensional, they elaborate the reason or the background of each character thinking that drive them to do what they did. Even the villains. It is quite rare to have this kind of approach. It makes the drama watching more interesting. The downside maybe for me is they should have more war and political conflicts scenes haha,, :D

And he was played so beautifully by Cheng Yi, that made us really care for Cheng Xu & couldn't bear his suffering. And for all its worthed, Cheng Xu at least tried his best to achieved his goal/dreams. The loss is in the hand of the people who didn't appreciate him enough, and wasting precious time consumed by distrust and anger.
