Unexpectedly Heavy Yet Emotionally Entertaining
Twelve Letters follows the story of two young people in 1991 who meet as classmates, fall in love, and promise to face all difficulties together. In 2026, other people meet because their lost parents seem connected to each other. The "couple" from those two era later communicate through letters sent via a mysterious mailbox. They try to uncover what happened in 1991 and prevent a tragic event happening.
At first, I expected it to be just a usual fantasy melodrama, but from episode 1, we're already shown heavy topics including domestic violence, gang fights, and other social issues. The series progresses really slowly, but it unfolds every layer of the mystery very well, keeping me intrigued throughout. The plot is solid and the story is really hits hard emotionally, but for me it's not too difficult to watch, they also include some cute banters that made me smile. The ending was great as well.
The cinematography is amazing, capturing different sides of China beautifully, the rivers and mountains in 1991, and the Beijing winter scenes in 2026. The cast's acting is superb, I felt every of their emotion, the leads' conversations feel both sad yet heartwarming.
Overall, it was something unexpected for me at first, but after finishing it, my mind felt blank and my heart still hurts. Definitely worth watching.
