Agreed! I also think there have been small moments when she rebuffs him. Like, he’ll step closer to her and she’ll step back from him. I don’t see what others are seeing about her behavior.

There is enough space in the comments section for fans and critics alike. I’ve already laid out what is factually accurate about the reviewer’s language. If you don’t like someone’s interpretation of the violent scene, just ignore it.

Yes!! I found it really charming when he volunteered how to get the most money and land in the divorce. COUPLE GOALS šŸ˜‚šŸ‘šŸ»

It’s totally fine if you find the language of the review hyperbolic and those words aren’t the ones you’d choose to describe the incident in your own review.

But the terms ā€œwife beaterā€ and ā€œbeat until bloodyā€ aren’t factually inaccurate. If a man beats his wife once, he’s a wife beater. He isn’t a serial wife beater but he is a wife beater. Similarly, he used enough force in his violence that it resulted in blood. The drama itself verifies this by including a close up of the wound while her maid attends to it later that same night.

And again, there’s nothing wrong with your feeling for this character or your choice to defend him. But the reviewer doesn’t need to ā€œfixā€ their review or rewatch the drama because they’re examining a specific incident (when the character whipped his wife with enough force to make her bleed) when you’d prefer to discuss the character’s behavior in totality (he isn’t generally characterized as a violent person). You simply have a different interpretation of his violence than the reviewer did.

Yeah, I second ALL OF THIS. But I also wanted to point out that we’ve finally gotten a ML whose avoidance of women is built into his characterization in a persuasive way. His job is truly dangerous and it makes sense that he wouldn’t want to bring a vulnerable person into that orbit. It’s also been suggested via the cliff side scene that his relationships with his immediate female relatives have resulted in some sort of trauma. Interestingly, he’s the only ML who hasn’t expressed any sexism in the context of his relationship with a female partner. There’s been no sweeping and discriminatory generalizations about gender in his dialogue towards her, that I’ve noticed.

Yes! Thank you for saying what I’ve been thinking for so long!!

That scene isn’t an accident in the sense that he tripped, the whip skidded across the floor, and somehow gave her a sizable cut on her shoulder. He raised the whip with violent intent and struck his wife, leaving a bloody wound. Those are facts. No one should be excusing his violence by claiming he had another (significantly more disempowered!) victim in mind.

I don’t think anyone is a bad person because they like or want to defend a fictional character. At the same time, I don’t think it’s kosher to label a description of something we’ve all seen happen onscreen as a misrepresentation of facts

Totally! I did not trust this drama enough to believe she was going to be honest and then she was…it took me a full minute to understand what had happened! šŸ˜‚

I’ve written a lot of criticism of this drama and I stand by it. I still don’t think I’d recommend it to others, but MY GOD, this couple is THE CUTEST. Like you, I wish we hadn’t had to trek through the muddle of the previous episodes but I’m certainly content with where we are now and I’m crossing my fingers that it continues with the youngest sister.šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»

Let me just preface this by saying that i've been silently lurking because i don't want to rain on anyone's parade.…
I feel similarly! From the beginning, he never bullies her or gives her the cold shoulder or invents traps where she’s meant to prove herself to him. Even when he was cold, he was still generous, well mannered, and honest towards her. His avoidance of women seems based in prior life experience, not just hand-waved away as ā€œthose were the times!ā€

Now, this couple is THE CUTEST. They work together, protect one another, and genuinely seem to enjoy an equitable level of intimacy and caretaking in their marriage. It’s clear he appreciates her and she’s kind and understanding towards him. I’d totally watch a drama all about them!!

This is the same analysis of the whipping scene that I had.

It is correct to say he whipped her. That is what happened. Was she his intended victim? No. But who he was aiming for and his ultimate reason for the attempted assault on his servant are immaterial to the fact that he struck his wife with a whip and she bled from a gash on her shoulder. T

This is what the charge of manslaughter is for in the United States. If you drive after drinking and accidentally get into a car crash that results in another’s death, you still go to jail. The reason you were drinking and the destination you were intending to reach is immaterial to the crime. Of course, extenuating circumstances are factored into sentencing decisions, but they don’t negate the fact that a crime occurred.

He couldn’t be honest with his wife and tell her all the issues and that he needed to protect her from all that…
She clearly asked him to do this too. And then says later that the most hurtful part is that he won’t tell her.

The eldest sister would have been much better off marrying DYX’s friend. The guy might be a boring bookworm…
He also likes her for who she is and doesn’t expect anything in return, whereas it feels like DYX likes her mostly for the affection she can give him.

I hate how they try to compare this "historically accurate" drama with Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austin was ahead…
That’s such a good point! I forgot the extent of Wickham’s womanizing and how closely it mirrors Fuhui’s husband. Jane Austen was ahead of her time which is ironic because this drama is so behind its own. It’s great to find another true fan of Pride and Prejudice here.😊
