I'm huge fan of historical drama but this didn't quite hit the mark. From screenwriter of The Crowned Clown I expected more tbh. The romance was bla. No intriguing sword fights, the fl revenge even though doomed to fail, could have been plotted better...nothing to really leave a viewer satisfied. Its only the melodrama aspect that they nailed but thats so 2012 imao.
FYI for newcomers to cdrama.... 1. Cdramas tend to be long with many episodes so expect 'fillers', though this show was ok in this aspect. When you've seen hundreds of them you'd know
2. please do not watch with western expectations regarding the leads' relationship progression. Most cultures around the world expect relationships to start 'slow' so a bunch of us can actually relate to this. In fact, this show has more pda and more skinship than you'll find in most cdramas. Only very few can match up
3. There's a lot of censorship in China regarding what can be shown on screen, so directors and producers have to tweak the storyline to maintain continuity. Unfortunately, FLs become victims as they are then the ones portrayed as 'shy' and refusing pda due to cultural expectations as well.
4. Because our leads get together much earlier compared to other cdrama, they would have had 'too many' kiss scenes if FL was accepting all of them which in reality, would have made their contracts pretty expensive.
All of this should make one realise that its not easy for these guys to bring such a heartfelt romance without relying on some of the usual drama tropes.
I hope I have explained why some of some cherish this drama to bits
I don't know what this has anything to do with my comment but FYI If you want to watch all episodes of the drama you have to be prepared to pay for at least one site that caters to Asian content. Why should you give money to Netflix and not the originators of the content.....I pay for Viki where all the episodes have been released..I also subscribed to Tencent on YouTube to get early releases as well. I understand if you're not in a position to pay all these but there's no such thing as a free lunch. These actors and related platforms deserve to be paid for what they do so exceedingly well as well. So, if you're not paying then you'll have to be patient and wait.
I apologise if that sounded it a little harsh, but I consider this show my happy place so any 'unwarranted' criticism is unwelcome
Re-watching now that its premiered on Netflix. Yin Guo holding that butcher's knife trying to cut a mango makes me laugh everytimeπ€£π€£π€£π€£π€£π€£
This is the sort of drama that communicates with you through your body. Where there is a non verbal scene, your body's reaction will fill in that gap. I'm sorry to those who did not get that 'feeling' that everyone else is raving abt this drama. People who enjoy the 'feeling' of 'falling in love' especially at that young naive age will understand this the most.
To those who don't, I'm curious to know what 'falling in love' looks like to you....and do you enjoy romantic shows in general? If so, care to share the ones that reasonate with you the most.
Avid cdrama watchers definitely recognise that gems like this come once in a blue moon and I'm stoked!!! Romance in dramaland is rarely portrayed like this. Ordinarily we would have waited 16 episodes for for them to get together, all the whie being left to attend some long workplace or sport plot virtually.....I was just at work writers, I do not need another job while watching a drama!!! I swear I could put various professions on my resume now and I'll be good at them πππ
Same! I love this type, so far ive only seen this one and love me love my voice do you have any recommendations??
I first watched FL, ZJM in a thriller sci-fi mini drama called Reset. Its got a bit of romance but it seemed to tie in perfectly with the plot. It was a time loop drama which was exceptional by most standards in my opinion

If you're looking for shows with mostly romance with little more intelligent writing, I recommend Cdrama You are my glory (loved the leads banter as a couple mostly in 2nd half of drama) Meet yourself (Both leads had excellent chemistry with the camera!) Love 020 (it had its faults but it was an intelligent drama where the leads had each others back from day 1) When I fly towards you WIFTY(Mostly high school drama but it was full of heart and cannot forget Su Zai Zai and 'Rang Rang' oh my heart π) Hidden love (though I had an issue with over emphasis of the leads age difference, you'll be fine since you liked love me love my voice. Same writer as WIFTY. Road home (ML was the total package and manages to convince that he was in love) The day of becoming you (If you enjoy body swap; thought the leads did really well) Dream of splendor (historical- Loved the first 3/4 of drama - more mature romance) The ingenious one (historical- If you love political tactics - mature romance) Wonderland of love (Historical- One of the rare dramas that manages to combine political, action and romance in a mostly logical and entertaining package)
This is what I expect to see when a show's genre is 'Romance'. Many dramas love using this tag when they're anything but! In fact, I will argue that not many writers and directors know how to portray romance on screen. As such, I watch gazillions of dramas in search of the 'ONE' but only to end up just watching mediocre shows because I have come to admit that its very hard to come across the really good ones. This one will definitely enter my "Hall of fame"!!!
