Yes. I definitely enjoyed the novel much more. The series was quite disappointing for me too.
But overall, I also think i tend to be more lenient with c-dramas because I don't understand the language as much, and hence can't fully pick up the nuances.

I had already read the work it was based on and liked that. So I was already invested in it before it began.

The acting really makes it a bit hard to watch.

I was so strongly for this drama when I started watching it. "It's really clever". "If you binge it, it'll make sense and is fun to watch."

But, omg. What an unmitigated disaster. Halfway through, they completely lost focus of what the story was and gave up all hope of filling the plot holes.

Really. A huge waste of time. If any of you are planning to watch it, prepare for the disappointment.
