he is laying the foundations for when (he believes) moth gives in to him... he's not helping dean, he doesn't think dean and moth will last knowing dean's background and moths personality... I don't quite remember the wording but he did tell moth to compromise with the next person he dates (which he hopes to be himself). moh understood what the Dr meant and it drove him even harder to make up with Dean.
