It's not just because he was dying, before he met her becoming the ruler of the world was his only ambition, he had no one he cared for, no lover and no family, (well a proper family anyway). Now he's with the woman he loves, so everything else doesn't seem as important. Priorities change in life, and meeting his significant other changed him. It makes him different from all the other bloodthirsty rulers. The ending was fine, they chose each other, they chose love over power.

It's not so much what they want but how they go about achieving it. The ML had an evil mother but he still turned out good, even if things didn't go his way he didn't resort to evil deeds like some other character in this show, cough cough Run Yu. I have no sympathy for him, even if he had it hard growing up. ML all the way.
